Just my take. Alternative views welcomed.

1. The CASH value of its c/fwd losses of c.£70m (ie what any producing oil & gas co wherever would save if it bought JOG). Both Conservatives and Labour have stated acc losses can be offset against profits at a rate of 40%. Ergo JOG’s £70m of losses would save £28m of tax for a profitable O&G co.

2. Cash in the bank, plus short term forecast (net) cash receipts (discounted for risk of non-receipt and cost of money). JOG had cash of £13m at 30 June.Annual cash burn is down to £1.5m pa. If the EIA is approved next yr and FDP approval follows, JOG will be paid a further £16m in cash by NEO and SQZ (in total).

3. The value of at least 20m barrels of 33°API light crude in a proven part of the NS. The value has be discounted to reflect the risk of Labour being re-elected in 2029, along with all the other risks that come with the industry. It is safe to assume both the Conservatives and Reform will do all they can on being elected in 2029 (if one or other IS elected - perhaps both in coalition?) to undo some or all of the damage inflicted by Sunakhunt, then Miliband and his equally stupid and destructive Labour cohorts.

4. The value of the prospective oil in Cortina, Verbier & Wengen fields.

How much does all the above add up to? Depends on how much you discount the prospect of oil and gas coming out of Buchan etc. If someone bought JOG now, cash plus the cash value of tax losses would give a value of £41m. If the FDP is approved in the spring, that would add £16m to JOG’s cash resources – say a 50/50 chance adds £8m to the £41m, making it £49m. Divide by 32.5m shares in issue = 150p per share.

Then add however much (say) NEO or SQZ would pay to increase their stake in the Buchan fields by 20%, without increasing their share of infrastructure costs estimated at £900m? It was worth £180m to JOG before Sunak decided to start playing around dishonestly with a so-called windfall tax that quickly became the EPL. The upstream oil & gas operators weren’t even the ones who made the big money out of the temporary increase in Brent Crude and natural gas prices in 2022/23. It was the downstream players - retail energy (mainly) gas suppliers and the forecourt operators. They’re still coining it in today. But politicians couldn’t (still can’t) hit them with a WFT because consumers' bills would be higher - which Govts now seem to want to pay. Brent Crude and natural gas prices are international prices all upstream operators are forced to subscribe to, so they're open to theft by devious and outright dishonest politicians in Govt.

However you interpret all the above, JOG is worth a lot more than £18m (55p per share). It can survive until either Labour is forced to recognise reality or is kicked out. Patience remains the name of the game.

It doesn’t make sense for anyone to invest in anything in the UK under Labour, which thinks it is perfectly fair to look at any sector of the economy that is doing well – then tax the profits to destruction because they’re there to tax. Sunak set the dial. Reeves (who doesn’t understand anything about business or real economics) just turned it higher, to disastrous effect. ie both main parties are to blame. Labour is just a lot worse.

UKCS upstream operators won’t be spending any more on projects than is needed to ensure that what’s already been spent isn’t wasted, given all the uncertainty these clueless morons have caused. “Look again in 2028 or 2029” would be my guess on the way the story will play out. Things that don’t make sense don’t last – particularly when they make the whole population worse off and the masses can’t buy things they regard as their entitlement to have. If I was NEO or SQZ, I’d sit out Labour’s 5 years of self-destruction, then pick up the thread and continue. But in the meantime I’d be open to discussions with any industry player with deep pockets who wanted to add to reserves, even though they’re in the UK. A state-owned oilco would be fav to make a bid. JOG would have a decent value in these circumstances – I’ll set this out in a separate post.

We have to rely on Labour getting the boot in 2029. But will those who voted the current lot in, when Starmer had already told everyone he is a committed socialist (ie communist – we already know Miliband is) come to their senses? Or the useless Conservatives rid themselves of their arrogance and do a deal with Reform?

Look at where we are at present and the prospect of getting the EIA approved, the level of deceit and dishonesty associated with what looks to me to be a tacit agreement between the Govt (either directly with politicians, or via the now rogue NSTA) and the judges in the Supreme Court is beyond contempt. The result will be no more NS drilling if the Govt doesn’t want it, regardless of whether it’s of an existing licence or not. Not sure what happens in 2029, post Labour. Revocation of the Climate Change Act would be a start. This would clip the Supreme Court’s wings. It’s all very complicated. It’s no wonder sector sentiment is so negative. The GBA project can't be beaten on minimising carbon emissions - but if I understand correctly that's on extraction. It's Scope 3 emissions that are the problem (ie the oil will be burned at some stage, thereby increasing "harmful" greenhouse gases. Simple logic dictates there'll be lower overall global emissions if the GBA project proceeds, because the oil that's needed will be produced by someone - and whoever it is won't have extracted it as efficiently.

The GBA JV – assuming it survives – will be counting on Labour’s successors (single party or coalition – as long as the LibDems aren’t involved) immediately reversing Labour's nonsensical proposals. More and more people are seeing the bogeyman “climate change” for what it is - a means to tax populations to the hilt and make them do what governments want . Somewhere in there is an evident aim to “weaken the West”. The world’s 6th largest nation in economic terms (the UK) is as much as one would have thought Labour could affect, but Starmer has offered £11bn of our money to help other countries meet their net zero targets too. Utter cretin. Wasting a further £22bn of our money on CCS is mindboggling. Even The Guardian recognises the stupidity. This Govt is so dishonest and so determined that no more drilling will ever take place in the NS (even under existing licences) there’s a danger it might stoop to instructing the NSTA to revoke existing licences if the licensees fail to drill exploration/appraisal/production wells strictly in accordance with the licence terms. But this would reduce trust in Govt to absolute zero. Someone in the Treasury would at this point surely tell them to stop, because they’re permanently wrecking the country.

Under Labour’s new tax rules it will be impossible for any NS project to make money on the fields they have licensed. This won’t bother Miliband et al. There wasn’t much in Buchan for NEO and SQZ even before Reeves took out her wrecking tool and increased tax to 78%, removed the investment relief and limited the costs available for tax offset. She’ll finish the job off in the Budget by restricting or altogether removing the ability to claim Capital Allowances on infrastructure costs and other capex. A fundamental principle of taxation that was established when tax was first hatched…..gone on a whim. No tax relief on the cost of the assets that allow business activity to take place, profits to be generated and taxation to be collected by Govt.

You are correct, surety. My intended post will focus on the various options to JOG and different possible outcomes. It's beyond any of us to predict which way the balls (it's certainly A balls - as in "I've made a right balls of my financial situation" which I mutter several times a day under my breath and have done for some time now"r ) will drop.

I'm not kicking myself for having too many eggs in the JOG & SQZ baskets. I got pretty much everything right in my risk assessment. JOG, in particular, ticked all the right boxes for me from a "wisdom of this investment" perspective.

1. Is the investment in a sector not blighted by negativity? Tick

2. Track record of key management? Tick

3. Honesty and integrity of same? Tick

4. Significant skin in the game? Tick

5. Compelling business plan? Tick...........

Should I have factored into my assessment of risk the unashamedly dishonest, greedy and self-serving behviour of the supposedly Conservative Chancellor and subsequent Prime Minister of this formerly great nation, and his weak, lapdog successor as Chancellor (the rhyming Hunt)? Even Labour was only proposing the Conservatives should charge a WFT of 10% of the extra profits the industry was making as a result of tensions in Ukraine. By the time Hunt has finished, that had become more than 75% of total profits ("more than" resulting from the restriction of expenditure allowable against tax to "normal" profits only). The effective rate of tax charged in the P&L accounts of Harbour Energy in 2022 was 100% (PBT $2400m; Tax $2,392m: PAT $8m); Enquest has had an effective tax rate of in excess of $100% ever since 2022.

Don't talk to me about politicians of either Party (LibDems too - they'd have tax rates higher still). They're alll liars and cheats. Disgusting examples of the human race. Our best hope lies in Reform continuing to gain support. I'm moderately optimistic in this regard. Tice and Habib (who I hope will come back to the fold) are imv ok. Farrage is the best politician by far but I'm not totally certain about his motives.

Who cares what I think? We all have our own views. The electoral system in the UK is broken and needs fixing, but it won't be. Vanity and personal agendas will probably prevent merger of the least bad parties but anything is possible where votes are the prize.

I'll see if I can raise some enthusiasm tomorrow or Weds. It's about JOG's inherent value. It does have one and it's a lot more than the current SP implies. That's as long as the BoD behaves sensibly and ethically and politians don't do anything that's even more dishonest

I sincerely hope the new BP chief pulls their UK listing and lists in the US instead. As it BP's share price that's vexing investors (and therefore him) every man and his dog knows the EPS multiples on the DOW and Nasdaq leave the London Exchange in their wake.

At last - payback for lying about the profits made by the "energy giants" who it will be even clearer to see havent been interested in the North Sea for years. Sunakhunt and now Labour (in spades) have killed medium and small enterprises - "enterprising" being the operative word with their totally unjustified (on any grounds") 9 year period of outright theft - telling everyone they're only taxing "super-profits" when they're taking everything these comapnies make.

The industry's representative body, OEUK, has been little short of pitiful in failing to get across to the average person in the street how much this unjustified tax-grab is going to cost them and their country. "Naive" doesn't go anywhere near describing their approach to "discussing with Government how there might be better ways to meet the Govt's needs". Pathetic.

It's akin to the BBC telling people from Israel that the conflicts with Lebanon and Gaza (Palestine) caused by the atrocities of terrorists I won't insult animals by comparing their behaviour with, should be resolved using patience and diplomacy. You can't reason with either terrorists or people who are insane.

Work out for yourselves where Miliband and Reeves fit in with all this. And OEUK.

Flexing some muscle is the only remaining option. Even saying the industry is considering restricting output to minimum levels consistent with maintaining the integrity of production infrastructure - perhaps for a week in the middle of December - if Reeves doesn't confirm she'll back off and start seeing sense, would be enought to bring transport to a halt. Not only would it be fun on the roads, but supermarket shopping wouold be great fun too. It's not as if people in Britain would behave inconsiderately by filling every available container with diesel or petrol and buy 200 toilet roles per person for everyone living in their Govt sponsored accommodation. Does anyone know know if illegal immigrants would get preferential treatment - for instance by getting extra food delivered to their hotels? The hotel owners would be responsible for stockpiling the bog rolls. It's only fair.

Nothing will make any difference to Miliband, Reeves et al. A Labour oaf (on Question Time I think) told the audience that the forthcoming Budget will ensure "the oil & gas giants" pay a proper windfall tax on their huge profits that have sent everyone's energy bills soaring. This will help fund the transition to green energy by 2030. Britain will no longer have to rely on dictators like Putin for its energy.......and everyone's bills will be a lot lower too, because renewables cost a lot less than fossil energy. LIAR - on several counts. I am SO fed up with dishonest politicians. Come to think of it, it isn't just politicians - dishonesty is rife in this once great nation, at one time internationally acclaimed for the standards it set.

Like Jim333, my holding here is intact, although the likely timescale for meaningful reward might now be of more relevance to my offspring than to me. Sense usually prevails at some stage and it seems to be dawning on more and more people that what is being proposed is not only totally implausible, but it will wreck hundreds of thousands of lives and lead to Britain's financial ruin.

Couerdelion - it isn't worth getting into discussions with someone who is unable to recognise the attempted humour (ridicule?) in posts I make about temperature changes between breakfact and lunch in Devon. You do, however, seem to realise I don't buy the existential threat posed by anthropological effects on greenhouse gas levels in the earth's atmosphere - or indeed what they might lead to even if I did buy in fully. The problem is: I have always tried to think for myself, understand as much as I can about the subjects I study and reach whatever conclusion that needs to be reached by thinking things through (sometimes on a multidimensional level).

I seem to have missed out on "groupthink". How careless.

It would be helpful to me (and possibly to other "deniers" too) if you could explain what the climate catastrophe is and how it will manifest? We all know what followed that May, dressed up as a tax on extraordinary profits that was no such thing - it was a tax of 75%+ on every UKCS operator's total profits. This was followed in Nov (by which time his dirty behaviour in getting selected by a bunch of devious MPs, orchestrated by the 1922 Committee, had been rewarded with the PM's job - Party members were ignored so they got their globalist, Euro-loving, 'putty in their hands' man, who drove the Party straight for the cliffs, from which they later jumped as a result of being stupid, disorganised, dishonest, incompetent and in it for themselves. Never again will I ever vote Conservative. I know any number of people who feel the same. To hear Jenrick yesterday saying those who voted Reform belong to the Conservatives was an insult, followed by (not so) Cleverly saying he would never contemplate a merger with Reform confirms they're a busted flush. All integrity has gone - they're vying for the top job while Labour is a sitting duck they're not even challenging. They they have nothing different to offer. To recap: the EPL was a desperate, dishonest, move by Sunak to raise money and please the masses. Damage those nasty oil & gas companies producing all that toxic CO2 that's resulted in vast areas of former desert going progressively greener over the 40 years it's been possible to view things from space. Far fewer people die from heat than cold too.

Sunakhunt set it all up for Labour to do what it does - take what's there and tax it to extinction. I'd bet the pitiful remaining value of my oil & gas (only) share portfolio on Reeves canceling FYAs in the Budget. The industry has 3 weeks left to stop talking and take some action.

Milband et al) that this will be a monthly event until they remove their size 12 boots from the windpipe of Britain's most important industry and back off. Restore tax rates to where they were before the greedy and incompetent Sunak & Hunt poked their noses into an area they didn't understand. At least they only wanted short-term money and votes from it, whereas Labour's objectives are different - and a lot worse, because they're based on zealotry and incompetence. It doesn't matter to them that they'll be destroying Britain and strengthening countries like China & Russia. It will be "a price worth paying". "It's not gonna happen" should be the industry's response, but OEUK is all words.

Labour might change its thinking a bit when there are riots as the roads are gridlocked and supermarket supplies dry up.

Reeves will halve or altogether remove FYAs on 38% of profits (ie those taxed at the windfall rate she's introduced "because that's what they charge in Norway". "No it isn't - don't be so stupid" would be a fair response, except that virtually no-one takes the trouble to actually look at and understand how the Norway tax regime works. It is extremely generous in many ways Reeves selectively fails to mention (ugly vache). Norway flourishes at 78% tax (and will continue to do so as the UKCS industry continues to crumble and die because investment is penalised). There will be no coming back this time - companies were promised there would be no repeat of the 8 year Brown/Osborne era of greed and stupidity that left the Treasury totally bereft of NS oil tax revenues for very nearly 3 years between 2014 and 2017.

There's no point trying to negotiate with terrorists and zealots (inc the current Labour Govt). Don't even talk to Reeves - it's pointless. And they've got the Supreme Court waiting to kill Rosbank and Jackdaw if needed.

Hit Labour with reality - it's the only thing they'll understand. They're cowards at heart and will quickly suss what's needed when UK wheels stop turning , which is not to make the UK almost wholly dependent on other nations (some unfriendly) for its energy needs, condemn the nation to blackouts, send inflation through the roof and subject us all to ever-increasing Govt control over how we live our lives. Labour's apparent belief in Miliband's "almost 100% renewables - cheaper too - by 2030" plan is insane. The level of imported energy and hence trading deficit might well result in the IMF having to step in to restore order.

if labour's destructive plans involving the little matter of affordable and reliable energy supply for our nation are anything to go by, the clear lack of understanding of the economics behind almost everything connected with the discovery, production and delivery of oil & gas amply defines their unfitness for office. oil & gas is a difficult industry to understand fully - i'm only just getting up to speed after coming up 16 years of investing in uk based oil juniors, where (until may 2022) there were good returns to be made if risk profiling was anywhere near ok. that was before politicians of both colours decided to nationalise (without compensation) all profits formerly belonging to upstream ukcs operators.

the ukcs is an ageing basin - but one in which there is still a lot of oil & gas to be brought ashore in the right hands, which aren't those of the oil majors. but politicians pretend (ie lie, by throwing red meat in the direction of people who hate the concept of others being successful, despite those they resent and criticise having worked hard and taken personal risk to achieve what they have done. One worrying sign is that the temperature here yesterday increased by 6°C between about 7.30am and lunchtime. I didn't risk going outside given the last thing I read (before your warning) was that global temperatures have risen 1°C over the last 40 years and this poses existential threat, particularly if it increases by another - say - 1°C over the next 40 years. So 6°C was truly frightening. Did the same thing happen in any other parts of the country?

Forgive me for asking a question that's been bugging me for a while, Genghis, but given the establishment of the IPCC in 1988 (36 years ago) and so many countries having signed up to decarbonisation on a global scale, how come all the data being put out by the IPCC, NOAA, University of East Anglia et al still shows practically vertical growth in the thick, flame-coloured red lines in the graphs presented against a backdrop of a planet on fire that are said to depict global temperature increasing beyond measure. I'm not for a second suggesting the organisations presenting this data intend those reading it to be in any way influenced in their thinking about climate change btw. Anyway, if temperatures are syill rising at the same rate, does this not suggest that everything put into stopping global warming in its tracks these past 40 years or so has been a waste of time and energy (happily not fossil energy or we'd all be dead). There's also the little matter of cost, plus a creeping reduction in the choices it is open for us to make, as individuals, on how we live our lives.

The link is to a presentation given to a group of relevant individuals in Australia by Professor William Happer, one of many acknowledged physicists, meteorologists, geologists and "climate scientists" who have had funding denied them, their names and reputations smeared, the clear intent being that they should be "cancelled" for expressing views, opinions and facts that do not fit "the climate crisis is upon us" script the whole world is supposed to sign up to. This is despite all the un-doctored and balanced facts and data going back 3bn years + showing the material presented in support of the: "we're all doomed unless carbon energy output ceases immediately" is in large measure based on exaggerated projections that are materially misstated in the same direction. Now, 40 years into the movement, these are having to be revised or withdrawn altogether, always replaced by more of the same. Conversely, the data and facts presented in support of the "this is primarily dishonestly presented misinformation designed to benefit certain individuals and organisations who either collaborated to create the "CO2 is a dangerous pollutant" myth (it is the direct opposite of the truth - the planet could do with more CO2, not less - it would certainly be greener) or have jumped onto the "climate change" bandwagon - mainly becaise there's perceived "safety in numbers" and there are no prizes for being the odd man out " just in case there's something in this climate catastrophe theory. 10,000 others have jumped off the cliff, so better join them just to be safe" kind of thinking.

Other (genuine) experts include Dr Judith Curry, Dr Patrick Moore, Prof Richard Lindzen, Prof Steven Koonin and and a few more on top are all worth listening too. Note they all present indisputable evidence in support of their views.

So that I can properly assess how frightened I should be and I might protect myself (and my wife and dog - two different creatures of course) could you please explain what's going to happen - and when?

What's concerning me a bit at the moment is that I can't recall a summer colder or wetter than the one we've just had. How much colder and wetter could summers get in Devon if every year is hotter than the one before and this goes on for - say - a thousand years or so (the flick of a finger in geological terms)?

Anyway, as you clearly know there's a "climate disaster", you should be able to explain what it is we should be fearful of and when it's all going to happen.
