I get what you are saying anon and it's very tempting to think 'Shell' = 'safe', 'a dead cert', etc. The sureness is an illusion and the general risk of any equity ownership should never be forgotten. Twenty years ago I would have been much more confident, but the coming of low carbon and renewables is a case of when rather than if.

Current events have already created a black swan and it's conceivable that could bring forward sharply the transition of energy provision. When that happens, companies which hitherto appeared insuperable become vulnerable; some will be toppled and out of the disruption, a new order emerges. You don't want to be left holding stock when such ferment occurs.

Yes longterm is largely talking nonsense and stirring. The notes placing is reported to have been very successful, so much that an extra $1bn worth of notes will now be issued; the issue was well over 2x subscribed too.

I do agree that the immediate outlook for cruising and any sort of holiday provider is very bleak. The six or more months we'll be waiting for something of normality to return will be beyond what most businesses can survive without an income.

If they cancel the dividend (which they're perfectly entitled to), then the business is better capitalised to counter any shocks. So further down the road once it becomes prudent, they can restart distributions. Would you really rather have a payout of 5% now that might result in a significant loss of capital in the future?

Covid 19 looks like an industry ending event. The sector is going to shrink and whatever weak business is left won't support the amount of companies around now. Shame, they'd sailed along for years making steady returns.

Still, with respect to Covid-19, the company hasn't actually commented on future bookings as you implied. The last time they mentioned bookings was only to comment that they were ahead of last year. At this point, it's not possible to say how or if bookings have been affected -- it's speculation only.

No intent to scare. Volatility of that magnitude is a warning flag itself but the general downward trajectory for the equity valuation reinforces it even more so.
