Banana, AFC have already previously stated that the cost of transporting hydrogen is prohibitive (or words to that effect) even more so in these remote locations, and where are you going to source it from and transport it using green transport to get it there ? Makes perfect sense to produce the hydrogen on site. Don't forget this is a showcase for Extreme E and AFC to show the entire race series can be held using 100% green tech. Made me laugh when Bond was asked how much the system cost and he said he didn't want to divulge that information to Extreme E.

Also, they wouldn’t be able to use this unique system in a region where it in the winter season as you get next to no power at all, for mine, 3kw in peak summer, 100w in winter. So this unique system would have limited use outside of events like this.

The first RNS mentioned this was a unique design only solar as it’s 100% green with the energy produced on site without the need to transport hydrogen in, if they are taking hydrogen with them it probably won’t be green hydrogen and the vehicle taking the Hydrogen to site probably won’t be an electric vehicle that has been charged with 100% green hydrogen so you would lose the whole benefit of the unique system. As a comparison regarding the number of solar panels needed I’ve got a 3.4kw system (14 panels) which has been fully operational for 9 years in November and has generated 29,500kwh, they need to provide 2Mwh.

I'm not sure why yesterdays news had to wait to be released until after the fundraise announcement, they've been in talks since January and a PO will be received in the coming weeks, so once again news held back to allow large investors in at a lower price than it would have been had this news been released earlier.

I really hope racing with conventional engines doesn't die out, I watched a few seconds of formula E and it was boring as hell. If you ever go to watch an F1 race the most incredible memories for me are the roar of the engines, and the smell of the fuel.

Still lots of questions but twitter has just popped up with the AFC tweet, marketing finally seems joined up. For sure if we had seen another hydrogen company mentioned teamed up with Extreme E then everyone would have been saying another missed opportunity. Looking forward to more announcements to follow.

Yes Musc, in this setup solar panels produce hydrogen, hydrogen powers the fuel cell which charges the battery which chargers the cars, but you still have to get 2MWh of energy from somewhere, in this case a very large solar farm.

Not talking it down Bananaman, now that the hype of the RNS has passed, all of an hour, it's then natural to look at the detail. If the hydrogen is being produced by solar then what is the commercial benefit to using a fuel cell rather than just solar panels and a battery, it's important to know, as the answer would tell us if this is a commercial sale or just a deployment to show off the technology, either way it's great news but clarity from AFC would be nice.

What size solar plant will be needed to produce 20MWh ? This isn't going to be portable. As Anneowl said, why not just use the solar plant to charge the battery, what am I missing here ?

Bananaman, where is the evidence that this is a sale ? Payment on receipt of order, but what is the order for ? Marketing rights ? AFC to provide emission free EV charger on a 1 year lease contract maybe ? AB spoke about deploying reference systems and to date we have none, maybe this is the first reference system deployment that he spoke about.

What i like about this contract is -
a - it's high profile so AFC can no longer hide when things go wrong
b - because its raced in remote regions it won't be cancelled due to Covid19
c - it has to be completed on time next year
d - huge worldwide audience
