RE: 5000 new jobs!12 Aug 2021 13:13
"our wrong about the money, the recruitment is across many areas and there is big focus on design and buying" - the debs own brands need £500m? No not really. They will be small beer to the core which is growing 25% on revenue of £1.6 billion.
This is £500m of capex investment not just hiring a few extra designers (capex for that old Platform thing). It's proven how small beer the Debs brands will be as they won't even get their own sites they are just fluff in the Debenhams marketplace
"Debs Brands do not need this, prices are higher, quality is better and generally lead times do not need to be anywhere near as fast" - agree I said this to you a while back when you tried to catch me out about platform. "trend" sector relies more on speed and test and repeat (but not how topshop did it 30 years ago) when a blue staple jumper will always be a blue staple jumper
But as you said yourself test and repeat order for KM and the lines went from 300 a year to 1,500 which you said wouldn't happen.
"Marketplace will be and is a mix of Brands that will be happy to fill inventory/take direct returns etc and the better more well known ones that will not, so therefore have to be bought in, old argument that you lost " - so do this for yourself. Go on Debs and you'll see Wrangler and Lee as bought in. How many of the shoe. clothing and then watches are marketplace? It's about 95% to marketplace vs bought in (excluding the boo brands). Yeah wrangler might sell a lot of jeans but doesn't mean it will be the beast for Debs
Even of Wrangler there are only 22 items and 15 of Lee. Do you check your points before you write this rubbish? Or make it up - 27 products in total
Also the irony here is that Regatta (of which you are CEO) is on the marketplace. Along with Bench and Hype which are ok brands so it's not really true. Why did you choose the marketplace route for regatta?
"Margin drivers will be all the own buy Brands" well this has changed. Our very first wrangle was as you said Asos's reseller margin was the same as Boo's own brand margin. Good to see a turn here
But yeah this £500m of capex infrastructure isn't for Debs
