This is just following standard disruptive technology processes. Any new technology doesn't just have to be better it has to be radically better in order to justify capital spend to replace the existing capital that has already been spent on the technology it is replacing. So, if batteries supplying an electric vehicle are struggling to beat a range of 250 miles and something with 300-400 mile range comes along for a similar price, I suspect that it will not supplant the incumbent. However, if something comes along that delivers 1000+ miles range and/or is a third of the price then it stands a chance of doing so.
The article focuses more on electric vehicles than grid level storage but you will note that there is a concern expressed around grid storage usage or Li ion and this is not really addressed in the article.
Technologies come, technologies go and Li ion will eventually be hard pressed by the next technology. That may be just for existing niche applications, emerging applications where it doesn't currently dominate or across the board but it will ultimately happen.
