Not really - GSK is just a boring share (for now) in the grand scheme of things.
I mean to say a move of 2p on the day ...

Let's see if GSK can climb above £13 first. These £1 spots proving hard to break.
During January £14 was used as a ceiling by the MMs to push us down, with CS broker issuing a Sell Note to send us down.
Despite all othjer broker being neutral or positive, Credit Suisse's bear broker was in charge and that was compounded by a poorly communicated set of results that allowed all the negatives to be exaggerated, so down we went again below £12 at end of Feb. We've manged to climb back to where we were after results at £13 and now to tackle the worry-wall again. Can we get back to £14 in time for Q1 results end of April ?
My guess is we are stuck in new lower trading range of £12-£14 until we get good news on the JV collaborations.
It's going to be at least another 18 months or so before the split is worked through, which is going to be costly.
Emma did not impress with Results presentation and Covid is dragging on, slowing down the usual pharma sales.
We are not expecting any profits on any covid-vaccine work, so it's all about being patient for some time and collecting the 80p divi for this year in the meantime.

Halfpenny - I wouldn't take any notice of that 18m - it's just end of day window dressing/uncrossing trades I presume - happens with every share. It won't make any difference on Monday.
It's all about the future. There should be nothing in the results that hasn't already been flagged - we expect poor results and the new broom should make it as bad as he can get away with, so can put a positive spin on the future (under his new command).

I got out too early at 2747 on Wednesday, but happy as only bought on 2nd March @ 2546.
Hope to buy back in after ex div at under £27.

Have to agree Sigma
Holding for very long term does not work with many FTSE100 companies. It does work for some though, but especially not the old phones, big oils, tobacco, banks, retailers, GSK, etc.
Mining shares seem to do well in the FTSE.

Thunder - agree dividends should be neutral - but if you look at SP movement around ex div days there are huge swings that can be profited from. Just last month IMB was 1505 day before ex div, dropped about 75p on ex div day (for 48p) and then dropped another 50p in next 2 days. I sold some at 1505, bought back (150% of what I sold) at 1410
If you just sit and hold, you miss out on chance to gain on the ups and downs.
You win some, you lose some.
About 3 months ago another poster alerted us to the movments around GSK divis. So I am now on the look out for the bigger divis. did you see RIO drop £5 for a £3 divi recently ?

Hi Robina.
If you have enough shares them might be good idea to split into tranches.
When it went ex div last month I sold 1/5 of my shares and bought back (same shares + 50% more) 95p lower a couple of days later.
That way I still had plenty invested if the SP went up, and got chance to avverage down just a little bit.
Since then I've sold 4/11 @ 1372 and used that to buy BATS @ 2546.
I've juts sold BATS Wednesday @ 2747 for a nice gain, and still have my IMB.
After BATS goes ex div, it will not be long before IMB pays its divi.
If IMB starts to fall like you say, I will sell some and maybe rotate into into BATS again.
ATM, IMB is 13% of my p/f, down from over 20% a couple of months ago.
I would expect to have 10-20% of my p/f in these two shares as think we have good chance of recovering SPs, and big divis while we wait.
I tend to have targets to sell batches as the SP rises for IMB of £15, 1650 and £18.
and if price drops would purhcase batch at £13.50 (if funds available).
Just my thoughts on how to use the SP moves to reduce average costs where you can, and not expecting to get back to £29 first paid in Jan 2018.

Re NCYF - not a commonly followed share, but one I found about 3 yrs ago when looking for divi paying shares. It was paying 4.4p p.a on SP of 62p - and for 3 yrs previous traded bw about 57 and 65 I think. It's a fund investing in fixed income bonds etc and when I looked at the majority - thought they were well know names - with interest rates bw 6-10% on terms bw 2 yrs and 10.
We can never be sure if safe and Covid caused a slump in price from 60p to about 30p, before immiediate bounce back to 40 and a steady climb to just over 50p where I sold at 51 on Dec 29th. I was scared the divi was not sustainable.
Having looked at Y/E Report - they think they can cover divi out of earnings and if not will use some small reserves for next 12 months. so with price back at 48p, over 20% lower than my first purhcase, I was happy to take the risk again with about 6% of my p/f, to supplement my SUPR REIT and ASEI Inv/Inc Trst. Intend to hold for divis on all 3, but will sell if get to 10% capital profit and rotate into something similar, as have alternatives to cover them all if needed.
so if you're looking for income, a good idea with all the usual risks.
If you're looking for growth then absolutely no use I would suggest LOL.

Certainly would not double up - too many headwinds before back to full production
I have 9% in my p/f as my choice of mining sector share - built up 3% in Dec, Jan & Feb each.
Think my next 3% going to POLY as good results with a similar divi.
Will wait until Monday - likely to sell 3% and put in pot with POLY.
Time to play the divis maybe with CEY normally in april and POLY in May.
If CEY flatlines after results, may sell up at a loss and put all in POLY.
No point having 6%/9% standing still, if same sector provides good alternative(s).
Would like to buy RIO or BHP but a bit toppy for my liking.

My reason for selling is recent histroy with ex div dates.
Especially IMB has been brutally kicked down by MMs for last 8 divis.
The FTSE100 is by far the worse performing index in developed markets over the last few years.
A lot of "old economy" businesses are in the index, but the valuation of some is crazy-low.
When you see the US valuations going through the roof, it's hard to stomach the likes of IMB and BATS making good profits, throwing off huge divis, seeing their SPs trashed for 4 years now. OK they have a lot of debt, and face the ESG brigade of being "sin-shares" !
I will be looking to buy back into BATS after ex div, and keep hold of IMB which is 13% of my p/f.

Really not sure you need to look for an explanation of SP moves every day.
Commentators are just doing a job - and markets will do their own thing.
They will always try to find/make a reason for a daily move - just like the newspapers

I try to evaluate all my investments, using main sources of turnover, profits, Balance sheets, P/E ratios, divi yields, and chart trends.
I may just be unlucky, or maybe just useless, but I nearly always end up in losing positions.
sometimes they come good, and more often not - so that's why I am called CSDI - Crap Share Dealing Ideas.

CEY has been in a downtrend since last summer, started by the West Wall news, and compounded by the falling gold price.
Nobody "knows" the future, so all we can do is take our position based on how we see the risk/reward, and use position sizing as we think fit.

I've been nibbling here since December @ 125, added in January @ 133 when I thought we were on way up. As soon as I bought in January we started to drop nearly every day. Added some more in Feb @ 109, thnking there was support at around the 102 level, and again we've drifted lower for another month. Was thinking of adding some more to my 9% of p/f, but decided to wait until results.
I am considering moving 1/3 of this investment into POLY if we do not get some positive news on the SP next week, and will add my next 3% into POLY if CEY is going to continue flat-lining. It looks like it may be a couple of years before we're back to full production, and I may consider it better to be investing in something that is already going in the right direction as POLY had very good results recently.
Fingers crossed CEY starts to improve, but this is reminding me of my long-term suffering from 2011-2014 when I first bought CEY, at the time of the Egytpian unrest.

Looks like a good call - but don't be surprised if BATS has a another run up before ex div. £28 still on the cards.
Might be hard to find good price to get back in on way down, and in the meantime think we've both got IMB.
I'm well under water with that one and will be holding a long time as first bacth bought at £29 in early 2018 - ouch.
My 2nd batch (cost 1483p) in profit if I count the last two divis, and my 3rd bacth at 1411p bought after last ex div.
Big divis on both, but cause SP headaches as MMs really kick 'em hard.

I've added a little NCYF to my income section, which has a divi to compare with these two at 4.46p p.a on cost around 48p.
not expecting anything exciting, but has traded very narrow range pre-covid of 57-63p, bit now down in high 40s at a new-looking-range of 45-53p.

As always, DYOR and don't treat my thoughts as any recommendation - we all know the risks etc.

TBH no idea. PFC has gone from over £17 down to £1 in last decade.
Turnover has been on annual fall, Covid caused more delays in 2020, Results delayed from Feb to april. SFO hanging around - it's got a lot to contend with.
I thought the January drop on the SFO News (now 4 yrs old) again was liklet to but a bottom in the SP.
The RNS dropped this week when I was out for a couple of hours, so missed my chance to get out quick, and got out Tuesday with a bigger loss than I wanted @ 101.8 (at 24%). Dipped my toe back in today and clawed back just 8% of the loss with a day trade. Best to wait until Results before taking longer term position. It's a big risk/reward opportunity if you are brave, but I am not yet ready to commit to more than a day trade.
At least my profit on PFC today was more than I would have made staying in BATS today, but think BATS certainly better play than PFC short term.
As I say, best not to take much notice of what I do - normally best to use me as a contrarian indicator LOL

Decided to get back in here today as part of my core p/f for income.
Happy with the 48.1p paid, as down 9% in last couple of months.
The divi seems secure for this year at a massive 4.46p, so around 9.5p based on current SP of 47p.
My plan is to hold for the divi, or sell if gets back to 53p.
If SP remains static, we're getting over 9% p.a return.
Always a slow burner, that traded bw 57 and 63 for several years before Covid.
The divi has been maintained despite the 20% drop in SP since 31/12/19.
Fits nicely into my SIPP p/f.

A tricky call with BATS on the rise.
I just had one batch and sold yesterday at 2747, having bought at 2546 at start of month.
If I had two batches, I would have been happier, as would sell half and hold half for the divi.
Like you I am overweight in tobacco.
I have 3 batches in IMB - at £29 (ouch), £15 and £14 roughly for average of 1888p.
for the last divi I sold 1 batch at 1505 and bought back at 1411, but if waited 1 or 2 more days could have got back in another 50p lower - arrgghh.
I suspect BATS will drop more than the divi amount after ex-div, but may not be enough to trade out and back in.
If the market continues to grind up, may be better to hold for the divi.
Always unknowable - just have to play your own way.
did same with GSK, selling 1 batch at 1275, bought back at 1215 - agian could have done better if wited another couple of days to buy back. alway the FOMO effect when you sell or reduce.

Funny but I just sold at 2747 after my recent purchase (2nd March) at 2546.
It's probably got some gas left in the tank in run up to ex-div on 25th, but I thought I'm close enough to 2750 for now.
No doubt missing some profit, but its had great run for 6 days. It's due to have a down day, but bucked the trend today big style !
It seems to have an area of resistance coming at £28, so thought I would take profit before we get too close to ex div day.
I'm sure any serious traders would be expecting more - but I am not a trader at all - more of buy and hope type.

Hi all,
Just to update on my position.
As we breached the 101 low, I decided to close my position and take a loss for now (getting out at 101.8 somehow !).
I will keep funds aside for a couple of days and see whether it is worth getting back in.
No idea where this going atm, and suspect we are heading lower in very short term.
The company has good liquidity (per pre-close RNS), and needs some positive news soon.
It would help if directors could buy, but they are precluded until results are issued.
The fact that results are delayed is normally not a good sign, but with Covid as a ready-made excuse it is hard to know what to read in to it all.
for bigger risk-takers this could be a good time to get in.
For me I will now watch to see how things develop and hope to buy back in at some point soon - but cannot see anything as positive catalyst today.
That could all change in an instant ..

If we are in and it happens, we are laughing.
If I am with my target profit, that's good too.
It can always turn against us at ant time too - I was in PFC yesterday when bad news broke and sent SP down 18% in 2 hrs.
anything can happen.
Key for me is have a plan like Mary.
Keep a balance, so you do not risk losing everything if it all goes pear-shaped.
I tend to diversify by having shares in different sectors, and try not to concentrate too much in any one share or sector.
At the end of the day it's about risk and reward, and nver any guarantees in this game.

I think you are rather more skilled at this, than I am.
I've only got a couple of hundred shares in this, and was looking for an exit at 1450.
Noticed it tends to jump in steps of 150p-200p over a month or so at a time.
Had a couple of successes back in 2018 H1, and held one batch for 20 months, for a 15% gain nearly all down to divis.
A nice share if you can be patient, even with its lower divi and focus on renewables.
Was surprised to see it go to £16+ , as view this as buy upto £13 and sell above £14 range.
I don't have the funds that you can employ with multiple batches on each share.
I'm a overweight with GSK and IMB/BATS, but hopeful of LT recovery.
