Although the yield is obviously important it isn't actually the most important consideration for the Potato farmer - he can regulate yield by irrigation but to much water is bad news.
The most important things are quality, dry matter content, tuber size and storability so I looked at the first Indian crop trial and saw this -
"POLY4 application reduced the proportion of non-marketable potato tubers by 27% compared to MOP + S"
As a grower that to me that is exceptionally impressive, but even that doesn't tell the whole story.
I suspect that the Scottish potato breeders will be able to develop varieties that can get even more benefits from Poly4 with flavour, disease resistance and dry matter content being the prime considerations.
