As though to confound you they sell another £12k on Friday pm! So we have a forced or at least determined seller plus an overall decline in commodity prices ( my firm reckons almost -12% YoY for non-oil commodities) with ~ -2% more declines to come to the year end. Precious metals are the only bright spot ( a relief to my battered commodity portfolio!). Great opportunities for more investors with a long-term perspective here now. Confirmations of licences in Oman and Moz plus progress in Portugal will pump-prime the share price in the next few months in my opinion.

BTW according to Mining Journal, the new Oman mining law requires the following payment scheme: “Under its terms, mining companies must pay a minimum of 5% of the annual output of their mining activities in royalties; a financial guarantee amounting to 1% of the value of the budget allocated by the licence holder for their exploration and mining operations; and a contribution of 1% of the value of the annual output of mining activities to support the local community in the area surrounding the relevant site.”

If you want to preserve your sanity here you need to suspend your concept of time due to cultural differences? I.e. the Arabian view of time. “In the United States, it is common to use the cliche "time is money." I would go forward a few days to 20th August 2018 when our FD Michael McGarthy sold 2million shares for 8p! There has never been a director deal since. Maybe a combination of this and the Oman RNS? Certainly sucked the air out!

Analysts are marking down lithium largely because they have little vision beyond the current year. This makes it more difficult for juniors with marginal return projects. Luckily we have a low cost project that is still economic at lower mineral prices. It also means that potential new entrants are deterred from lithium prospecting which will serve to reduce supply down the line. In a few months, maybe a year, analysts will be calling a supply deficit.

Today’s low closing sale price on little volume could be seen as more than a bit of a bargain, particularly if DA is about to pull a rabbit out of his hat? Hopefully not an ex-rabbit!

I seem to recall reading similar reports in the 1980s that said the mobile phone business was a non-starter as folks couldn’t afford the high price of phones yet here we are in 2019 with the whole world connected. The solution was of course a subscription based model of ownership. Back to EVs and it seems that meeting environmental targets demands a switchover to electric but not everyone can afford them. Dates for the end of Diesel and petrol are planned. Now maybe the opportunity is for service providers to take on the responsibilities of ownership and maintenance while users hire? Whatever the model, it has to happen and soon. The point is that these issues are not insurmountable and have been overcome before.

The Chinese government is deadly serious about EVs. At around 60 kg of Lithium Carbonate per car, that’s about 15,000 T per year to keep just that one factory supplied. No wonder the likes of Gangfeng are taking controlling positions in miners e.g. BCN. They will be happy to take all we’ve got.

Demand will be driven by changes in legislation. At some point it will not be possible to buy a petrol, diesel or even hybrid vehicle, only electric. I feel it will come in a series of small wins rather than a “Ta Da!” RNS? Can’t really expect to sign a full-value offtake agreement until the feasibility study is complete? The SP will do it’s own thing in the meantime as the market transfers money from the impatient to the patient! Sentiment is poor at the moment across all the small lithium players. The folks invested in BCN can’t understand why they are not all millionaires already after the Gangfeng funding deal was announced and instead have watched the price crash as they wait for it to be confirmed. There is a lot of difference between a great funding/ offtake deal and a lousy one and you only get one shot at it. The views expressed in Mining Journal confirm to me that SAV is the one with the best chance of getting it right.

Sav comes out on top in my view but it’s not all plain sailing. “The exception that proves the rule may turn out to be Savannah Resources, which Potts has said does have the potential to supply Europe with lithium. Savannah estimates the initial capital cost of building out Mina de Barrosa will be £88.2 million (US$110 million). The cost of building a refinery it estimates at $300 million. But Savannah is taking a cautious approach - the company will send its lithium spodumene to China for refining for the first few years, and will only be building a refinery if it can secure a partnership.”
