Totally agree Thompi and WelshFalcon. The change in strategy enunciated more recently by AS is, I believe as a result of talks with interested pharma companies - although he's still holding out the threat of the option to go ahead with old off-patent drugs if they don't sign up to pre|CISIONing their own toxins!

Machiavelli is much maligned. Usually by people who haven't read the book and don't know the background to it. I found it a fascinating, short read. In my reading pile is Sun Tzu's The Art of War, but that's a much longer book!

There are various ways to extend the revenue from branded drugs by patenting new formulations (added active agents, enteric coating, slow release, controlled release, etc), new indications, new manufacturing processes. The original patent covering the active agent (the expiry of which is the main part of the patent cliff) would probably include a general catchall with wording "and prodrugs thereof." However when that patent expires, that protection goes also, which could explain why Bachovchin went after doxorubicin as there are no ptent issues there (lots of dose- and hence efficacy-limiting side effects though). For patents due to expire, the active agent should be fair game for any company to exploit in prodrug form.

I agree that the UK govt is corrupt and useless but it doesn't decide which drugs get approved and when. What it does is set the framework for the professionals in the various parts of the Department of Health to do that.

The covid situation was different as it was all new so the govt was able to politick around with the system and make sure their mates and sponsors were able to take lots and lots of money out of the public purse. Came across an interesting looking book this morning: The Dictator's Handbook: Why Bad Behavior is Almost Always Good Politics. The blurb:

You mean NICE, The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence? Do you think AVA6000 might not be as efficacious or as cost effective as doxorubicin + the cost of treating side effects? In the UK, the price is 'agreed' between company and the NHS.

Anyway, that's an issue for later as first approval will be in the US, a much larger market.

I severely doubt that HMG hold up the work of the MHRA as regards drug approvals.

I would agree that it would be much better if the Health Secretary was actually a qualified doctor and not some career (for which read Yes Man) politician though!

As far as I'm aware HMG has no influence on drug approvals. Do you have evidence that they do?
