Well I do not feel your exchange rate arguments are very compelling. When I left school in 1962 there were 12 swiss francs to the pound. Steadily fallen since now 1.3 The US dollar I remember at well over 3 to the pound when I was a foreign exchange cashier at Gatwick 1966&7.In 2003 it was 1.5 went up to 2 briefley in 2008 and then plunged. I can also remember it almost reaching parity. The Euro was 1.4 to the pound when I bought my house in Italy in 2007 It was above what it was now in 2008 and went almost to parity at one point. Italian life is generally good apart from the bureaucracy. The roads are worse than the UK pothole wise even some on the E45 dual carriageway. The pukka motorways have good surfaces but are usually toll roads. The snag here is that apart from the official economy there is the black one and the various mafia ones, eg The Mafia, Ndrangeta, Sacre Coronata, Comorro etc. On the other hand if a tech problem they say so and how it will be solved. Certainly their NHS is very good as we found out when my wifes melanoma took hold having been told it was nothing in UK. She died in January.
