Naturally the EU has no say over UK interest rates. We do not use the same currency and have our own central bank.

These days much bank lending is done on a credt scoring basis not how we used to do it. CCC (character, capability and capital) PRS payment, security and rates.

So who do you think sets EU interest rates? It is of course the Governing Council of the ECB with the aim of keeping inflation to as close to 2% per annum as possible. So of course EU has very big impact even if following events rather than leading them.

It still seems to muddle people. The interest rate does not matter as it is the MARGIN which is much the same whatever the base rate. The only snag is that higher rates may lead to greater bad debts.

I used to work out the profit of the branch every half year not computerised, and of course lived through interest rates of 13% later on. Peculiarly few people would take my advice and lock into the rates avaliable for savings then.

Not quite spot on. The Fixed Term Parliament act of 2011 makes the fixed term 5 years not 4. Previously a parliamentary term HAD to end at 5 years maximum but very few Prime Minsters dared to leave it that long.
