RE: Price of lithium could triple by the end of the decade4 Jul 2021 17:56
How much lithium in an EV battery? I have found estimates of from 10kg to 63kg, so let’s use 100kg just to be sure. That much lithium costs about $1,500 now, so triple the price and you need another $3,000 and a 10% increase in vehicle cost. Might have to take out the lumbar adjustments for the passenger seat.
I have always thought of Australia as a hostile nation, the way they treated their indigenous population. Almost as poorly as Canada, where Bacanora was born. And you have Secker, with both Australian and Canadian roots. Australia could throw a monkey wrench (that’s American for spanner) in China’s EV industry, by refusing to export all its lithium ore to them.
The Chinese are good with rocks but I doubt they can work with clay until they steal some technology. As pointed out at AGM Q&A, lithium is found on every continent. (They were afraid to mention the sea-water potential.)
Lithium could triple in price, or it could sell for a third of its present cost in a few years. There is history of the price dropping by that much. Lithium is not a rare earth (did you hear the one about the British parliamentarian who called silicone a rare earth?). But there are some rare-earth elements for which we should be concerned.
