The president's pardon power "extends to every offence known to the law, and may be exercised at any time after its commission, either before legal proceedings are taken or during their pendency, or after conviction and judgment," the high court ruled.
I believe this is with reference to federal crimes rather than state crimes, by way of example, a state crime would be something like snatching a purse, whereas tax avoidance would be a federal crime.
The point being, could we see...
Trump convicted and subsequently imprisoned, yet winning the election, and pardoning himself to freedom!
Or some even more bizarre scenario, even if only temporary, where he becomes president but has to govern from prison!
