They did hit gas traces, and then a drill bit snag, and they learned more about the geology. These things happen on virgin territory drills, not uncommon at all. There's no guarantee of success this time either. All they can do is de-risk as far as possible in the budget and time available.

Backup is essential as there's no option for a third campaign, they have enough funds for this one but that's probably it without a takeover, so every detail needs to be checked and de-risked.
