The Economist this week celebrates the speed of development of the Pfizer joint (less than a year compared with 20 yrs for Polio, 9 yrs for measles) and the efficacy (90%+, when flu jab is only 40-60%), but has a long list of caveats and unanswered questions. Some of those questions now have initial, very promising answers.

According to Wikipedia, the Trehalose sugar used in that invention is natural: "Some bacteria, fungi, plants and invertebrate animals synthesize it as a source of energy, and to survive freezing and lack of water." Could be very useful, assuming it works, not just for the BioNTech vaccine, but Moderna too, and any of the new generation of vaccines based on mRNA.

Moderna are also due to announce by the end of year. They started phase 3 same time as BioNtech/Pfizer and use a similar mRNA approach. No hold-ups as far as I'm aware, and it looked very promising in earlier phases. Unlike Pfizer, Moderna got funding from the US "Warp speed" program.

Don't agree Grdian, the two cases are surely treated separately on their own merits, not jointly. For Nanoco, compensation is only part of what they are seeking: unlike Kaist or SVV, licensing IP is the foundation of the business. If successful, I'd like to think Samsung's rivals will be offered preferential terms for access to the technology, to really rub their noses in it.

Quite funny that money-focused Pfizer turned to Turkish immigrants in Germany (BioNTech) to make America great again. Meanwhile China and Russia have both recklessly authorised untested vaccines, effectively using their populations as disposable guinea pigs. UK effort seems more rigorously health based, both with the "PG Tips" Chadox vax (based on chimp virus, I'm not making this up), and the cautiously brave Human Challenge initiative, assuming it is approved. If so, the hVivo name is likely to crop up regularly in the media over the next few months, potentially worldwide.

Preliminary Pfizer results are outstanding, but do come with a bunch of caveats: I'm hoping for a further boost when results from the Oxford vax trial are announced. That breakthrough, along with the pricking of the boil (or v.v.) in the US seems to make prospects for 2021 much brighter. Both developments suggest less uncertainty and better trading conditions ahead.

All the caveats around this vax apply to ALL preliminary results, there seems little reason for the constant attempts on the board to downplay it, beyond defensiveness over the SP. The fact remains that on it's own terms, compared to most tests of a similar kind, this one was outstandingly successful. It's possible that the Oxford vax is even ahead of Pfeizer, just more circumspect about publishing incomplete results, but they are surely coming soon. Any SP volatility is temporary - everyone knew early vaccine results were due - and successful vaccines are ultimately far better for OO than dud ones.

As far as I'm aware, this isn't really "news", but interesting historic IP. It's surely even more relevant now than when filed, and potentially valuable, but AFAIK no-one is yet using it as the basis of an actual product, so what's new? Hopefully the brilliant scientists who invented this are getting the funding and freedom they need - more power to them in this brave new world.

dunno, the doctors and scientists are unusually bullish - the new technique could lead to a lot more vaccines using that approach. One thing I noticed was Pzfizer head saying they will be following up on patients from these initial tests for 2 years - shows the sort of timescales we're dealing with for potential follow up safety tests and vaccine comparisons. Also, they can manufacture 1.6 billion doses by the end of next year, which only covers about one sixth of world population, so again we're looking at more vaccines, more time, and more safety, efficacy, and comparison tests. S'all good man

Successor Lee Jae-yong seems to have somehow got at least one South Korean judge on his side. Isn't that interesting. The Economist credits him with business acumen, and he has been running a PR campaign to try to persuade the South Korean public that he should stay out of jail, despite "mistakes".

Slightly surprising that SK has such inheritance issues, given it's culture, but the fact that it forces changes at Samsung gives hope that it might lead to a financial review. Expenditure on dubious court cases as opposed to paying tiny percentages for licenses, for example.

With a major election imminent, it stood to reason that projects might be delayed for the reasons I have given, can you explain please why you took the opposite view? If I was right, then any delayed contracts might well be ready for signing soon.
