Its nothing to do with the hardware - its a failure to invest in the support required to maintain any computer software, the banks are scared of change, consequently systems written in the 60's - 70's still exist and have been patched with the cheapest solution possible with no regard for future maintenance. over the last few years most are now maintained by off-shore Indian companies - who quite frankly (in my opinion) do not have a clue, but it would appear they are cheaper and that's all that matters, short-termism is rife and has been for a couple of decades at our leading high street banks.
