Always beware of claims that one country or another is messing around in another's affairs. The degree of influence is often very much less than stated out of straight practical limitations. Yes, there was leverage in the 70s over central American dictators, but these were small regimes with backward people. Pepsi had more control over a government in the cola wars, drug barons have more control than governments, national corruption does not always involve political interference and maybe religious instead.
Look at the UK and Europe at the moment. Completely overwhelmed by a mad crazy net zero economic suicide policy based on a blatant lie peddled by a green lobby a green movement takeover with diktat governance where open debate is totally suppressed by mass media pan Europe. Not the classic model for taking over and controlling countries but the same effect as trying to construct a conspiracy theory that it must the US at fault.
The removal of Yan. may well have been more for the convenience of Putin as he falls out of favour, takes too much for himself, as for Obama. If the US really did have an interest in trying to control Ukraine back in 2014, the invasion of Crimea would have had a much more significant response including arming Ukraine to retake the land. Instead the US and the west turned it's back on Ukraine and did so again as the Donbas was 'invaded' by separatists. In fact, the total lack of interest and very weak response before Feb last year hardly points to west having any interest in controlling Ukraine. And support post invasion has been slow and very limited as the west expected Russia to succeed quickly. Rather than poking the Russian bear, it seems to have been the other way round as now NATO is suddenly much stronger, bigger budgets, extended membership and withdrawn forces being put back.
Russia simply came up against a population that wanted proper independence from the old soviet model, it was the people that voted and made the move. Just like Europe has had to come to terms with the UK rejecting Europe, and just like Russia, Europe is not accepting UK independence and is continuously looking to undermine the UK and prepare to force us back into the soviet EU system. Just look at the EU's attempt to annex NI, now the UK's Donbas to some degree. So far no live fire from the EU but continued resistance from the UK and there will be proxies in the form of Irish nationalists terrorists re-activated and eventually the EU army, yet to be formed, deployed to annex Scotland and maybe even Wales. All to come down the road.
You are right, things are seldom what they seem.
