Beaten back repeatedly on the battlefield, the Russian army exposed as a circus full of clowns and now their glorious leader charged with war crimes against children, the first ever permanent member of the UNSC to be charged. You should hold your head in shame trying to justify outright state terrorism. Eventually you shall have what you want, NATO involved, the yanks involved, the west involved. So far it is limited sanctions, limited defence weapons, limited money.

The sooner NATO is sent in to Russia and places the whole country under direct occupation, the sooner the rest of the planet can return to peace and prosperity. Russia no longer qualifies continued existence. You wanted a war with the west, the sooner we get on with it the better.

As I pointed out before, this charge, a specimen charge, has been very carefully worded. Maybe Russia will get it thrown out as the procedure to challenge gets underway, if they bother.

That's the rub. If the ICC was able to confine itself purely to non partisan investigations, then it could potentially get the support of the US. But legal teams have a knack of twisting incidents to misappropriate accountability or interrupt the potential citations to include virtually any incident. Many incidents are investigated against Israel, the US and others but fail legal tests. That doesn't stop the politically active lawyers chasing baseless charges. There are so many opponents of the US and Israel within the ICC, if there was a possible indictment, there are more than enough people to pursue it.

Disagreeing with an action is a very different world to proving it was a crime.

The classic case is the pursuit of Blair to stand charges over the Iraq war. Technically there is a case to answer because the last UN mandate wasn't presented (France and its oil interests). The defence will simply show evidence of multiple uses of illegal chemical weapons in conflict and against civilians and the obstructions to the Blix investigation to prove there was a reasonable suspicion the weapons still existed and could be used in terrorist attacks. That's why so many apparent atrocities never make it charges being made.

As for any country being immune, that is nonsense. The court can issue warrants against anybody as they see fit. Russia isn't a signatory but has had a warrant issued against Putin. Same for the US. The issue about not being members is that they won't easily give up people in the country. Sanctions are not applied, the Trump sweeping executive order in 2020 which caught up some individuals from the ICC was widely condemned, out of order, wouldn't have been enforced outside the US and was immediately overturned by Biden in 2021. Trump's erroneous action does not imply the ICC is not sanction-able.

It is nuts. A "sweeping" executive order, by Trump. Why? Because the ICC is used in partisan ways. Whose material do you reference? A lobby group called "Human Rights Watch", a great virtue of legal balance. And bear in mind these " Trump" executive orders were then lifted by Biden quickly. Under normal circumstances the ICC is not sanctioned.

You now suddenly use an overturned Trump executive order to prove... to prove what exactly? The ICC would still not be 'scared' to indite the US Trump or no Trump.

A Trump emergency executive order against a couple of officials. Perhaps if the ICC stuck to non-patisan investigations it would get Trump wound up.

You can't impose sanctions against the ICC. That's nuts. And the governments supporting the ICC have no say in any actions and can no way be held accountable. You clearly have no knowledge at any level how this works.

You have some bizzare ideas sometimes.

The icc can issue warrants and prosecute any and all of those alleged events. They have conducted detailed investigations to date, yet not enough evidence for a case.

Note the specific and very carefully drafted selected charges for Putin. No amount if bleeting and crying unfair will change the situation.

And you can't blame this as some US led operation. The ICC is a bit toooooo independent for western countries as significant war crimes have gone un challenged like in Africa.

Wrong, they can be. This is why this is so big and why Putin is now vulnerable to bounty hunters, both inside and outside the Kremlin.

Yeah, just what possible implications might there be? Or are you going to now try and argue alongside the sp going back to £15, all sanctions lifted, all trade restored, now all charges will be dropped and all war crime investigations stopped?

Ginger, there are plenty of wannabies in various factions in Russia that could take Putin in to custody and put a price on his head. Factions might even fight over that custody given the price to get for handing him over. Then there might be a moderate resurgence, an army seeking revenge on its humiliation, so Putin could be arrested and renditioned as a distraction.

I wouldn't be too sure this is going nowhere. The factionalism and rebound from the war is likely to lead to civil war and one particularly divisive figure now has a warrant out on him that can be used in many ways.
