So which Captain is command of the two boats? Did they do scissor/paper/stone on the way over or something? So neither captain has any instruction on what to do if a lunatic Frenchman starts popping of rifle shots within range? Or if one of the French navy boats decides to take out a couple of shots at RN weapon systems or radar cone? No standing orders on what to do at all? So at 3am in the morning both captains send confused messages to the night watchman at admiralty arch and wait two, three or four hours for a response? Meanwhile they are both in the life rafts!

In fact, the most famous of all the standing orders is sent by the PM the moment h walks into Downing St. In fact I think it is the very first thing they do. They send standing orders to the submarines on how to respond to a nuclear strike on Britain if the submarine is unable to contact the infrastructure after an attack.

I know enough of the procedure to know that the UK military do not have the freedom to engage at will on their own initiative unless they have been given standing orders. In the Balkans I know there was some 'frosty' conversations as the politicians wound up the military in some rather complex rules of engagement leading to some awful atrocities. The situation was only resolved when NATO took over and was given global standing orders and then left to get on with it. I certainly know that much!

Standing orders will have been sent from Downing St. There will be no need for permission to return fire. However, will the French boat carry out orders! At street level, the EU and commission is as despised in France as in the UK for the most part. The RN boats will keep a distance, and will move away from any boat trying to create a situation engineered to give the French gun boat to fire off warning rounds. I think it is more likely that if a French boat did try to harpoon a RN boat, the French navy would actually go in to get the French boat rather than let a few volleys off as instructed by Paris. four more new routes added in EU for BA. They are looking to move in heavy and don't forget the relaunch of LEVEL which we may hear more about on Friday. There is a reason why the commission wants to stop the 'foreign' flag carrier BA from getting a head start on the opening up of travel in the EU [irrespective of where the parent company is registered].
