Better detail in this article.
My fear for IAG will be a potential for Qatar to use its shareholder position to retaliate against Airbus if this escalates further, currently, "Fleet modernisation will continue in coming years with further deliveries of 64 Airbus A320neo series aircraft, 26 Airbus A350s, 10 Boeing 787s and 18 Boeing 777-9 aircraft."
As far as the seed of the incident is concerned, remember Qatar is state owned.
"The European Union Aviation Safety Agency, which is responsible for the overall design but not the locally regulated airworthiness of individual planes in service, has said it has not so far found safety problems with A350s that it inspected.
Qatar is so far the only country to ground some of the jets.
But a Reuters investigation https://www.reuters.com/business/aerospace-defense/costly-airbus-paint-flaw-goes-wider-than-gulf-2021-11-29 in November revealed at least five other airlines had discovered paint or surface flaws since 2016, prompting Airbus to set up an internal task force before the Qatar row, and to explore a new A350 anti-lightning design."
There is high level face saving politics, governments, regulating bodies and lots of money involved. To consider this issue as unrelated to IAG is a nonsense. It might amount to nothing, it might blow up into an all out battle with a lot of unexpected twists and turns. The EU is deep in these things as will the UK government given the production facilities and money committed from UK businesses. It is a failure of business to have reached the state where Airbus just dumps a contract like that which will almost certainly have some reaction. How much it could affect IAG, and lots of other carriers, remains to be seen but it is 100% a case of keep an eye on this part of the 360.
