The national burden of council tax in relation to median average earnings has increased by 108 per cent from its introduction in 1993 to 2022.
The North East had the highest council tax relative to median gross pay of UK regions, at 8.66 per cent. Scotland was the lowest at 5.1 per cent.
Burnley had the highest council tax relative to house price, with the band D tax being £2,244 to an average house price of £116,172, or 1.93 per cent, per year.
Westminster had the lowest council tax relative to house price, with band D residents paying £914 on an average house price of £927,774, or just 0.1 per cent.
Out of the ten lowest charging councils relative to house price, nine are in London with only Elmbridge outside of the capital.

West Devon, Nottingham, Pendle and Torridge all charge over 10 per cent of the median salary for their region in council tax.
Relative to both house prices and median pay, the four lowest charging councils were all in London.
Founded in 2004 by Matthew Elliott and Andrew Allum, the TaxPayers' Alliance (TPA) campaigns to reform taxes and public services, cut waste and speak up for British taxpayers. Find out more at www.taxpayersalliance.com.
TaxPayers' Alliance's advisory council.
Research by the TaxPayers’ Alliance found that council tax increased by 79 per cent in real terms from 1993/94 to 2023/24
Maybetoday, I always thought national insurance paid for NHS ETC. Please google taxpayers alliance if you want more figures.
Anyhow with me being "crass" I will not offend you anymore. I will take your advice and not waste any more of my life reading your Bilge. Good bye Filtered.
"Don’t get bratty on here, about the poorest paid. You either stand for Parliament to change it, or work with it; the other option is you stay envious and waste what’s left of your life!"
Where have I or anyone for that matter, been disrespectful to you Maybetoday? I am neither envious or going to waste the rest of my life. A bit nasty there pal. I didn't know council tax paid for nurses, doctors, military etc.
More than a third of council tax payments will go towards paying workers’ pension schemes within five years, a leading council finance chief has warned.
Despite recent efforts to reform pensions for local authority workers, by 2019 council taxpayers will see 34p of every pound they contribute paying pension bills, according to Chris West, executive director of resources at Coventry City Council.
So its not all spent on housing and schools. Cardinal, I get your point. Its just the sneaky way its been implemented on the British people and its unfairness I dislike.
"Generally it’s directly related to salaries."
Sorry have to disagree there. Council tax has gone up 76% in real terms since its inception. 76% above inflation that is. (Tax payers alliance) Council tax is a brutal and blunt tool that takes nothing like the ability to pay into account. Some are now paying over10% of take home pay to fund this tax. You build your own home and the council rubs its hands in glee " Thats a nice home ,you are now in band g".
No maybetoday , I respectfully disagree with most of your last post.
The Gov will not give anything away. What amazes me is the way council tax is missed / ignored. Council tax is taken from our net income meaning that my own burden at £3600 is actually £5000. I have to earn £5000 just to pay council tax. Council tax has become the biggest con in our history. Why nobody picks up on this I have no idea. When you retire other tax cuts basically make no difference. The Gov carry on stealing from those who have already paid their due. No vote from me at election for regular parties.
DON yes I agree he was confrontational, disruptive and the rest but I got a feeling his mental state was not good. Again you are correct about good posters avoiding BT chat as there is not a lot worth reading. I do like to read the BB myself when its on form. If SOM does return I hope he keeps it calm and talks through with others their opinions.
I hope you post again DONVANVLIET1 ( Fair name ) Then the reading may improve. My last words. GL
Don't know why this is not trading above £3. Can not find one thing to dislike with Lgen. Premium bonds interest rates starting a slow decline should make this share fly as yield will attract investors. But why so low? You can have a company that produces no divi has twice the number of shares in circulation and is double the price of Lgen. 20p+ per share is amazing. Will add more to my ISA asap.
Lloy fundamentals for Dec22= £5.808 billion. on LLoy board. My point with BT was £21 billion is no small amount.
SOM no offence taken. we have different takes on BT`s future. I am sorry you find it "unrelenting torture". We have only ourselves to blame for our own actions. An old sea dog term is "Hold fast" Thats my plan ATM. G night all.
That is just one of my points Pokerchips. Who are the Gov to tell a private company what to do or what equipment to use? We agree to remove the equipment at our convenience should have been answer. Anymore interference from you, the gov, will see us issuing court proceedings for restriction of trade or the like and loss of capital. Hope the new CEO has the balls, so to speak.
SOM, good evening and thanks for a well reasoned post.
Yep you are right about miss-management. I think even BT would agree there. And yes I think 4-5 years is time scale for recovery. What I have started to like is the massive BT revenue. Its near£ 21 billion which is mountainous. Getting fibre done and pension sorted are big orders but its coming. Lloy also have near 70 billion shares in issue which again is frightening. Bt have also started getting their house in order with customer help returning to our shores. Its one reason I use BT mobile and broadband myself. And I believe for others to.
A bid may come. But I am not convinced.
1st Mr. Draghi seems to have monetary problems. Buying more of BT might prove difficult.
2nd The UK gov would probably step in if more than 51% of BT fell into foreign hands. Major security issues.
The wage bill and pension liabilities are just about affordable. Otherwise no divi would be forthcoming. Pension liabilities will by nature reduce. Harsh but we all die.
BT`s technology was always good. Many years back I read a report that Europe was surging ahead of us in telecoms. Better broadband, mobile etc. When asked why BT answered (Not word for word ) " Why should we deploy our best tech when we will be forced to give it to our domestic competitors? They do not have R&D costs" It was a good point. OFCOM again. I do think BT should have shown more back bone years ago with Gov and its attack dog OFCOM. Stop rolling over and fight in courts. If someone wants our tech they pay for it. BT never got used to the idea they are a privatised company out of the govs clutches.
OK SOM lets give it six months and see. What else can we do. Enjoy the divi and be glad we don`t have Draghi`s problems. TC.
Lloyds have a revenue of £5.808 billion.
BT has a revenue of £20.681 billion. Near four times that of LLOY. When pension is sorted and FFTP finished this company has a huge potential to pay large dividends. The big if is OFCOM. Will they let BT succeed. The SP has slumbered for to long now and is overdue a nice recovery. It will come IMO especially when interest rates decline.
Starting to consider adding to my holding as BT could be next RR. Thoughts appreciated.
Morning SOM. Thanks for kind words but I to can have my grumpy moments. Fleccy being the other two chaps is just to deep. No way. I have never seen Fleccy resort to insults, mainly facts and news about BT. I do read his posts because sometime they have info I have missed. He stops posting when there are insults / disagreements about which is sad. If a poster does not like another's opinions then don`t read, its simple.
When the talk centers around "a you know what" then talk it through. whatever we scribe here will make no difference anyway. I understand the anger felt at BT`s SP. Anger will make people ill, chill out before you become an ash is a term I heard on a film years ago. A starter for 10 who can tell me which film?
Fleccy I hope you bring news / thoughts soon. GL. all.
Phat, Abject I ask you to give SOM a bit of space. Yes he can be grumpy cantankerous and fling a few insults about but I believe his heart is in the right place. A bit of banter is good for us all but when it starts to get somebody down its time to stop. I believe Pete has realised its gone far enough and I agree. Take a breather chaps and bring us some news about BT. Not a lot worth reading recently.
SOM, please don`t rise to any bait , keep the chair bolted down and correspond calmly. GL all.
"That's why the value of UK dividend payers is sluggish compared to some of the growing businesses in the USA who pay next to no dividends."
I don`t think that is the whole reason for sluggish growth. The UK gov is taking an ever increasing share of company profits and then having a second bite of the cherry increasingly taxing dividends. why risk money when any profits are going to be pilfered by a voracious Gov tax machine? Hence sluggish growth IMHO.
