Reliable diagnostics matter to poorer countries, but a lack of profit incentive means that their needs have largely been ignored to date. Global Access Diagnostics is a new social enterprise spin-out (May 2020) from one of the UK's leading Biotechnology innovators in rapid diagnostic technology (Mologic). Backed by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, DfID, FIND and the Wellcome Trust, and currently building one of Europe's largest RDT manufacturing facilities, we are guided by 3 simple ambitions:
1. To develop, manufacture and distribute affordable and reliable rapid diagnostic tests for non-commercial use in lower income countries (LMICs). Our focus is on epidemic, neglected and mosquito-borne diseases.
2. To innovate rapid diagnostics development and manufacture, in terms of platforms, eco-friendly materials and data capture for disease surveillance.
3. To move the center of gravity for diagnostics manufacture to LMICs themselves. We will catalyze and support the development of an active network of locally owned, financially sustainable (but not profit-driven) diagnostics manufacturing hubs in LMIC regions, improving responsiveness and security of supply, and leveraging donor funds to impact economic growth alongside health.
We are currently active in response to the COVID19 pandemic, but also have a growing product pipeline that includes Measles, Malaria, Yellow Fever, Dengue Fever and Ebola.
Helping all countries to strengthen their disease surveillance, containment and management capacity is not just a moral imperative. In an era of heightened pandemic awareness, it is an investment in health security for us all.
