RE: US National Security Advisor urged Iraq to work with Kurdistan to resolve contract disputes and pay arrears owed to US energy firms10 Mar 2025 10:02
Good post roger, sry if I coma across as cynical, its more exasperation tbh. I'd love to see full co-operation with the Kurds and witness the "rebirth" of Iraq, as its a crying shame that they have so much potential, but the corruption is so deep rooted that hope as I might I am doubtful of success. I was an investor here before we struck the first well, and was rather naïve then about the political hurdles our company would face, not just finding oil but getting it to international markets.
However love him or hate him Trump is president. We have never seen the like before the way he will force other countries to try and do what he wants or face sanctions/tariffs. So for us GKP investors Mr Trump is a godsend, because hes really putting a squeeze on the Iraqi politicians in a way they have never seen before. The gloves have most certainly come off.
We have already seen countries relent their stances around the world when threatened by Trump. Mexico, Panama canal, and the highly contentious Ukraine. Now the screw is being turned on Iraqi politicians, they cant hide and USA knows exactly what they are doing with their sanctions busting attempts with Iran. They are caught between a rock and a hard place and they know it...they normally try and play for time with endless biscuit munching sessions, but the wheels have already come off there with USA reps at the meetings and can see through the façade of deliberate inaction.
Might be enough pressure to force agreement, but no longer can Iraq sit on the fence.
