RE: Animal welfare & public opinion23 May 2021 13:07
I don't think militant vegans and anarchists trying to force their views on on the general public is particularly helpful. The last thing we need is for meat eating to become (more) part of the culture war.
All that will do is to exacerbate the existing problem we face were the woke left see synthetic meat as corporate, profit driven and unnatural (like GM) and the right see anything that challenges the torturing and killing of animals as an attack on western civilisation.
OK anarchists/anti capitalists smashing up McDonalds is hardly new and is unlikely to bring the corporation to it's knees or create the conditions for the overthrow of capitalism. However neither is the tactic of deliberately making impossible demands (McDonalds meat free by 2025). It's straight from the XR playbook. Likewise expect AR to oppose any, especially western scientific, solutions to the the problems posed by meat production. It's not about meat, it's about the overthrow of western civilisation.
Quote form am article by Stuart Basden, one of the founders of Extinction Rebellion (httpS://medium.com/@plaosmos/extinction-rebellion-isnt-about-the-climate-42a0a73d9d49). "And I’m here to say that XR isn’t about the climate. You see, the climate’s breakdown is a symptom of a toxic system of that has infected the ways we relate to each other as humans and to all life. This was exacerbated when European ‘civilisation’ was spread around the globe through cruelty and violence (especially) over the last 600 years of colonialism, although the roots of the infections go much further back."
