H hi - I think bozo the clown is preoccupied with fishing, borders in Kent and Irish Sea. I see EU consumers are using state run websites to change from U.K. suppliers, lorries are bypassing U.K. ports. It’s tragic. I would guess lies made to BT will be quite low priority compared to lies made to everyone else. Ido hope OFCOm has the courage to go against the grain and regulate price increases, but I doubt that with impeding economic / employment situation.

Am more honest comparison of cost would be to cost BT fibre covering the entire planet & moving ships, plains trains etc

What would be that cost? Has to include the ability to “hook up” at any point along any road, any field etc rather than per premise

On that basis, starlink sounds low cost to me.

Cool. Yes I’ve just looked up their satellite orbit. Their satellites are not geo stationary (low orbit). This means they are not competing for space & don’t need fuel to manage apogee / perigee. But antenna will need to be something special. Clever stuff

100w? I honestly don’t know about starlink but satcoms in general shouldn’t. Need much power at all!!! There’s something wrong if that’s 100w transmission as you intimate. Either way, competitor? Probably not ? But still amazing bit of tech

Hi hi - I think you are right to raise this out of interest.

Like usual all kinds of opinions on here (QAM - Jesss). I guess the point you are making is that’s quite a good broadband service on offer today, by starlink, when compared to anything BT is currently able to offer.

Maybe costs of running out fibre to the remotest of areas could be replaced by the government offering communities subsidised starlink accounts?

In terms of people scoffing at this service, I wouldn’t take too much notice, it’s an amazing technical feet to get this up and running, there are plainly so very clever minds behind this, The more I learn about it the more impressed I am.

As with twisted pairs, mobile phones etc etc etc etc my current understanding tells me there are limitations to this service, but I know for sure I’ll be proved wrong further down the line

Very dangerous for our investments in my opinion. BT could start taking flack for Bojo’s lies and lack of action.

This could also lead to other companies (I see Comcast & Liberty Media) positioning themselves as the solution.

It’s worth noting Darrock is leaving sky, replaced by a Comcast senior leader, who is actually a John Malone (Liberty media) protege.

BT need to get a move on or have a plan b, they don’t want to be building a network with these costs that ends up with too much competition in the group offering same/similar services.

Ndn - yep, there are, different thing I think, they fiddle the application layer. They are all traceable, companies are taking action I believe. Super easy to get those, I think individual ISP’s can close them down / prosecute, some (I think) are not criminal until they are made so. These devices would be a prime example of messy security, use them through your home bb, where you use other registered devices & they will put the user at risk if they are breaking the law. Illegally accessing content I think can be a grey area like the sites where some file share.

All kinds of protocols use the MAC address, dhcp ppp etc etc etc. Even things like IPV6 form a unique IP address from it.

Obviously as you know I’m no expert, but the MAC is unique, so all kinds of protocols re-use -for unique addressing & or routing. Companies like Netflix could request it, then lookup manufacturer, type equipment & a unique identifier of the device. Foot prints are left every where. Very easy to link the serial number to a purchase or equipment warranty etc etc then a home address. Just guessing, but interesting stuff.

Thanks everyone, always good to get this kind of expertise. I’m guessing what we are talking about is an internet / intranet foot print that can be used to identify law breakers. I would assume many of these trumpers will be tracked and asked to explain themselves, rightly so. This cycle of law breaking has to stop & I guess so much of it starts online.

NDN - Every interface card has a MAC address. These are registered to a manufacturer, and then finally linked to a serial number of a device, where that interface is installed. Every device is identifiable by this, I might be wrong, but it’s how banking, tv streaming companies etc know how many devices & what those devices are, to restrict access. I had all this explained to me recently, to help me understand better.

NDN - I couldn’t agree more. A robust defence of truth is very important, especially between consenting adults. I personally draw the line at illegal activity in general. Luckily these sites t&c’s include holding IP addresses, some protocols include a MAC. These can then be cross referenced with other internet activities. I understand a warrant can even overcome protection provided by a VPN. It takes time, but we both agree it’s worth it.

Rock - I have a small number of VOD shares. Because of the difference in share holding, I usually take pleasure from BT out performing VOD share price
