RE: Altnets - A Summary22 Jan 2026 12:15
Pokerchips - you are most likely correct, I see the same, have posted several times trying to let posters fill the gaps but the overriding, blind faith crew, just ignored the possibilities & shouted down anyone who might want to think about it.
It looks to me like a clear case of consolidation activity. Get reborn under a different name, restructured debt and off they go again.
The money and scale to consolidate most likely comes from usual suspects, virgin media, Vodafone, Sky (Comcast), Liberty, etc.
But do any of them have the appetite?
I’ve already explained where altnets or consolidators are tied to US they can use “chapter 11” to virtually erase / restructure debt and start again. Obviously usual suspects argue contrary because moves like this undermine their hollow rhetoric
Anyway, new arrival Starlink and Elon, take away his satellite technology & instead see his obvious and sudden interest in the UK BB market? Could he be an unexpected consolidator?. Probably not, but maybe he could be a part of a consortium?
I think it was snoooz who posted a valid point about how altnets have built over each other, which was stupid, but that doesn’t mean consolidators couldn’t cherry pick what they need.
This kind of logic then brings me back to Virgin Media again. Not because I love them, but because all this overbuild and lack of foresight means altnets cannot be brought together to challenge openreach fibre, but, can be used as a cheap method to start plugging virgin media network gaps.
Stupidly many altnets have built over VM areas, which leaves the whole consolidation idea in trouble.
This is what I mean about any alternative to openreach needs coordination. Who, if anyone is going to do it & is it too late?
Might all boil down to culture. If so, Comcast and Liberty global alliance would be the option, where their cable culture would hate the idea of using incumbent networks, because if their turbulent history with the major US comms companies.
Fascinating, but time is running out & for us as BT investors, this might make the difference between a ÂŁ3 or ÂŁ6 future share price.
