Earache, in a way your post is comforting. I too lost all in a divorce, albeit some years ago now, and have been aiming (no pun intended) to accumulate in order to buy my own home again. I too was buying at 80. I even lent my sons at uni 10k each to buy at that level in an isa, saying it would help them to pay off their loans.
I even moved to Cyprus because of EMH, as overseas earnings are not taxed here, and I thought EMH earnings not taxed would ensure enough to buy that (modest) house.
I still think our boat will come in. But you're right. Our timing was out, or has been screwed up by these damn politicians. Wish I didn't have so much tied up in EMH in the meantime though. It could be earning me something elsewhere while we wait. And I haven't the balls to sell at these levels. Anyway, news must be imminent, and we should see a degree of recovery - at least to 40 - when it does.
My pain is also spread across a string of other companies similar to EMH, and all in the same boat. Although I can't figure out why for most of them.
