I've just been reading about psychopaths and narcissists. About 1% of the population are clinical psychopaths but another 18% have psychopathic traits including lack of empathy. About 5% of the population have Narcissistic Personality Disorder but between 20 and 40% of the population display narcissistic traits to some degree. Narcissistic traits include admiring oneself (as the name implies) and always believing themselves to be right about everything. With these percentages, it's a certainty that a proportion of users of online fora like this one have psychopathic and/or narcissistic tendencies.
Internet trolls are specifically mentioned as typically psychopathic or narcissistic, or both. I've been watching such people for years. On a particular advfn forum, one individual has been ranting away for about ten years (10!!) I have little doubt that he's clinically ill.
There's nothing we can do about these people except to block them. Although that still means they're assaulting new users. But block them and feel sorry for them. They can't participate in society in a normal way, although they think they do. But they don't, because to do so requires empathy, a little humility and a desire to cooperate. They of course are unaware of this and think they're wonderful and everyone else is wrong.
Trump is a classic example of both types. He cares not one jot for the consequences of his actions on others (look at him calling military veterans who died 'losers', or his assault on welfare programs. He's actually been independently assessed as suffering from Malignant Narcissism - google it). The same is true for Musk. Just to give two examples that we all know.
Not all critics on here have these problems. One or two might genuinely believe they're being helpful, although their persistence and certainty still points to narcissism.
Pity them and block them. And just accept that the internet has this effect of amplifying the voices of people who are objectionable.
