Query:
Subject Driver Monitoring Systems and other safety aids.
Message Hello, I would be very interested to hear what RoSPA's policy is regarding the safety aids that are increasingly available. For example the driver monitoring systems that alert drivers whose attention is not focused on the road for any of a range of reasons. Whilst there is legislation against such inattention it's clear in my experience that it is ineffective and that serious collisions are occurring because of the multiplying distractions around drivers. It seems to me that RoSPA should be playing a leading role in evaluating and advising on the need to take advantage of any new developments that could prevent death and injury. Thank you for your attention to my query Kind regards
Answer:
from RoSPA’s Road safety manager, please see below
Technology has the potential to enhance driver and occupant safety through Vehicle Stability Control and blind Spot Information Systems etc. It can also be a source of potential driver distraction especially as car makers are putting in ever more complex infotainment technology into vehicles, the result being that drivers take their eyes of the road.
RoSPA is aware that in some vehicles it is now possible to maneuver through complex menu systems using touch screens or voice commands rather than use of simple knobs or buttons. Research in America has indicated that this is a growing issue and as such we are researching this issue further with a view to coming up with a policy decision from which we will be entering into discussions with the Department for Transport.
Kind regards
