anybody starts getting frustrated by having to wait a few extra days or weeks for something that is going to happen it is worth standing back and appreciating that Bushveld Minerals stands front and centre in the VRFB battery energy storage industry, and that this industry is going to be absolutely freakin' huge.

Yesterday at the Energy Storage Europe conference here in Dusseldorf I saw an incredible VRFB battery power stack that I could pick up with one hand. This was not a few hundred watts but instead multiple kilowatts power capacity. These things are intended for high cycle rate installations such as eV charging points - think >5 times per day as opposed to the rather underwhelming 1 per day assumption that Lazard makes for battery systems.

JtInv - yeah they started testing those Lithium-ion batteries 2 years ago, because that was what was available then.

As this articles explains - https://thebushveldperspective.com/blog/public-articles-1/post/eskom-battery-site-visit-410 they also tested a sodium-nickel-chloride battery at that time. That clearly is no longer under consideration.

Of course they are testing a Lithium-ion battery - you have to be able to see how they perform and degrade, in order to see just how much better a VRFB is.

JTinv - of course they cannot state that they are going to be putting their weight behind a particular technology. It has however been amply proven by BBN that the battery technology of choice for South Africa is Vanadium Flow batteries.

There are no significant Lithium-ion resources, no Lithium-ion battery manufacturing facilities, no large population ready to queue up to buy electric vehicles telling their government they must at all costs get a Lithium-ion battery manufacturing plant built in their country.

But what they do have large scale problems with their electrical grid - it needs to be reinforced with energy storage to mitigate the fact that most of the power plants are concentrated around Johannesburg and are going to need to be shut down because they run on coal (when they do actually run) and are making SA the dirtiest electricity producer on the planet.

Furthermore SA has 2 out of 3 of the primary Vanadium mines in the world outside of China, and many of the best ore grades in the world. That and they have the only one (ours) that is part of a vertically integrated Rock-to-Battery supply chain that could yield the thousands of jobs that the government needs to offset those lost by reduced coal production.

spbhoy - I agree with the first part of your point - however with respect to the second part we know that the way the MMs are playing things also has a big impact. What is particularly interesting about their behaviour in the last couple of weeks is that they are running a very neutral order book at present. The last time this happened was prior to the end Oct/start Nov 2018 rerate from 28p to 48p

Hilarious - it seems that despite them sucking up to Largo only two and a half weeks ago ( http://www.hallgartenco.com/file.php?path=Mining&filename=Largo_Feb2019.pdf ) they are now bleating on about how their (Largo's shareholders) don't love them.

raffym - trademarked and yes most V2O5 going into china is used to make Vanadium Carbonitride - the chinese have already figured out it is a good way to lower their costs and are already well set up for using VCN. Less so outside of China.
