The UK has other issues right at the moment so despite the climate change act of 2008 I think many other countries will be at the forefront of grid-scale energy storage:- the US, Australia, Denmark, Germany, India and dare I say it South Africa

Has approved plans for almost 1 GWh of battery storage. Interestingly these are 4 hour batteries, unlike the usual 1-2hr Lithium ion things - so VRFBs are definitely competitive in this regime.

Deanos - indeed 1- and 2-axis trackers harvest more of the photon energy available - typically 30% more. My question was more geared towards 'are tracking PV systems more suitable for fitting storage to, and if so why ?'

Here's a couple of thoughts on the subject

1. Tracking PV systems are going to be more expensive and probably will be provided with a more attentive maintenance regime. The additional cost of adding storage to this is then less of an increment as when compared with an uber-cheap, get the $/MWp unit cost as low as possible, fixed installation. (This obviously depends to some extent on the latitude and the funding regime.)

2. As shown here ( https://www.ilb-helios-group.com/daten/d.tracker.250.pdf ) the speed of turn-on/-off for a tracker system is somewhat faster, and a colocated storage system might be more helpful in smoothing out the subsequent variations that are provided back to the grid.

Why might trackers specifically be coupled with VRFB storage systems ? Does anyone have any experience with these ?

One very interesting thing Lindon, is the fact that ILB Helios make PV panels - and indeed they are one of the relatively small group of panel makers who also build tracking systems.

NEXTtracker, are of course another one of the leading tracking system manufacturers. Three months ago they announced the installation of their combined 1.1MW PV + Avalon VRFB (350kWH / 1.1MWh) solar+storage system.

Who else thinks that it is possible that ILB Helios and BE might work together ?

After all they do seem to be made for one another.
