RE: The problems about batteries26 Jun 2019 22:02
Ophidian - we had the whole 'battery' debate at the 3rd Vanitec energy storage committee meeting around 2 years ago. The conclusion was that if it stores electrical energy in immediately accessible chemical energy form it is a battery and that the vanadium redox flow battery is an apt description. Batteries that can be recharged are a subset of these called 'rechargeable batteries'.
Trying to redefine things, as Scott McGregor of RedT, did as 'Energy Storage Machine' just makes things even more of a mouthful. Scott claimed his beef was about 'batteries' somehow being 'disposable' ignoring the fact that the lead-acid battery was invented 160 years ago. In the utility energy storage space the term 'battery' has become accepted whether we like it or not, so the debate is pretty much over now.
