btw, I don't need my A/C regularly serviced for the simple reason I nearly always keep it switched off. It eats fuel, and anyway, as a cigarette-smoker, I prefer to open a window or the sunroof (depending on the speed I'm doing) instead.

Are you kidding, or what? I mean, i've visited your place. But a camel up the road? I know that there are a lot of sometimes eccentric people who (as expats) inhabit your neck of the woods, but who on earth imports a camel to the Dordogne Valley?

Have you ever been in (or driven) a recent Audi? The ancient old Quattro was a fabulous machine. The new things' roadholding in the wet or other bad conditions is utter sh i te, and will also give you a sore bum. The only good thing about 'em are their headlights.

Sorry to disappoint you, but I'm not. Different hairstyle (and colour), I don't do any 'Jesus gestures' when talking with people, my teeth (those remaining) are my my own, and natural, I don't own a 'trophy wife' (and why should I? she's as ugly as they come), and don't play Scottish Croquet (aka Golf). And have utterly no desires about political position and power, nor acquisition of such.

Maybe a slight common ground regarding meaninglous rambling. Which I'm finding myself doing again, right now. So I'd better stop.

My grandmother (paternal side) was from the Isle of Lewis ('Lewisian Granite'!), so the same goes.

Also, on both paternal and maternal sides, and for many generations, a considerable seafaring tradition.

Having some shares in HUR somes feels 'predestined', in a way.

Unfortunately, the AIS seems to have gone on the blink, and position updates for all vessels in the area are now getting very old. Other than (and very curiously) a small fishing-vessel a few miles from 'our interest', seemingly trawling for crabs.

I'm feeling a bit 'rusty' about my knowledge of VHS propogation (rather like that pilot who's being looked for, along with his footballer passenger), but I've got a suspicion this may be related to really calm weather conditions.

Oh dammit. I think I might just go back to bed for a couple more hours.

I'm not even going to open that link! Because (in general terms) I know what's there, and I'm too old and it's far too early in the morning to do such reading.

But Albi has said she 'didn't know wire rope was so complex'. But it is. And something about 95% of people don't understand, or even think about. Which most unfortunately includes people who use the stuff day-to-day, simply because they haven't been taught about it. And that's how accidents involving lifting-gear so frequently occur.

It's like drillpipe used on a drilling-rig. Which isn't just a bit of pipe, despite appearances, but in fact a tool machined to microscopically close tolerences, whose steel-quality must be first-class, and to be treated with care, with frequent inspection for wear. The Chinese haven't cottoned-on to this yet, though.

I wasn't clever enough. So instead went and laid waste to the University of East Anglia, outside Norwich.

Thanks! Though to quote the old classic Velvet Underground song 'Venus in Furs', "I am tired, and I am weary: I could sleep for a thousand years". Or the Stones: "You can't always get what you want".

Mind you, the Snail seems to be on 'shipwatch' as well, with a glass of brandy in his hand. And no doubt his log fire burning merrily, and snow outside. Whereas I've got to content myself with just a glass of wine, a slice of 'Gâteau des Rois', the central heating, and hearing some desultory rainfall.

If that sounds decadent, maybe it is, but there's a limit to how much coffee I can drink in a day.

Tow going at close to 6kt, middle of the shipping lane, offshore (waay offshore!) Alderbourgh (UK) or Scheveningen (Holland) depending on how you like to look at things.

She's within about 250 meters, though, and has been for a while.
