Im invested in lloyds and am happier now about its prospects than I have been for the previous three year's.
Agree the future ain't rosy but there are worse places to be, in my view, so I will continue to hold but not add.
Fintech will make gains but I cant see a major wobble with Lloyds in the near term as a result. Longer term I agree it's an inevitability assuming we avoid all out global conflict for long enough.

I agree with you. There are other views on this board though that usually fixate on people in receipt of benefits as the scourge of the UK. Also the perception that immigration is all about pull factors (ie state benefits) often surfaces. Somethings getting resolved through doing that, Im not sure what. Guilt, perhaps.

be reasonable - the new state pension pays significantly less than income tax thresholds. You would be doing extremely well with full 35 years cons and need around an extra £3k S2P and GMP payments to qualify for income tax. It is private income that tends to push people over the threshold in retirement. I think you want to exclude the state pension from being seen as a benefit because you are a recipient of it. This creates a conflict between your positive self esteem and negative bias towards people receiving state benefits.

Not quite free, Theseus. Someone whose sole income is a state pension has less than twenty five quid per week to spend on "luxuries".
I get the feeling that your basic assumption is that people on benefits are nasty scroungers pretending to be vulnerable.
"Cradle to the grave on the state". Rare that someone will receive state support all their life unless born with a disability. Think how an entire life on the state would feel - do you think it would be fulfilling? The point of state offering support at all life stages is that it's there when you need it, not to use as a stick to beat people who are unfortunate enough to be in receipt of benefits. State pension is a welfare benefit set up under 1948 National Assistance Act. It is the highest component of DWP spend, as Aris points out.

and irrelevant to this thread but that picture of pop. growth outstripping long term new build housing supply tends to make Lloyds landlord ambition look like good sense, assuming they can do it well.

UK population is expected to continue to grow but at a slower pace.

whether you care if this is from an increase in net migration or more births than deaths is a horses and stable doors approach - it doesn't address the problem of under supply and under occupancy or the risks of reducing green capital by ignoring brownfield sites and redevelopment of commercial sites. And the issue of quality and efficiency of new build housing is just as important if not more so, than quantity. The challenge includes providing the additional units needed as well as the replacement of stock which cannot be improved.

Certainly agree its one of the basic challenges of a state to ensure sufficient quality housing is available. But there are many other players who have been complicit in why this wasn't been achieved in UK, it is not solely a government responsibility but for society as a whole. Many people have profited from insufficient housing supply. Many additional costs of welfare are swollen because of poor quality or insecure housing. Last Autumn there were around 2,500 rough sleepers (ie roofless) many of whom will compensate themselves for this situation by problematic use of drugs and alcohol. The long term mental health burden either created or entrenched from rough sleeping is very hard to recover from and a poor reflection on UK as a whole.

Your second point seems to be using rats as a metaphor for people in poverty so I think you are a bit warped.
