They're going to need to find hundreds of millions to decommission Montara, unless they can pass it to Shell as was floated by the previous CEO. Production is expected to cease there in 2030. The provision in the balance sheet assumes they can leave much of the infrastructure in place. If they can't then the number would be much higher.
Despite what many holders think, the problem here isn't the net debt. The net debt is not a problem. The other liabilities are the problem. If they didn't have those liabilities, it would be incredibly cheap.
The accountants get it, that's why the net equity is barely above zero.
The market also gets it, that's why the market cap is so low.
It's a gamble on much higher oil prices and offloading Montara to Shell for the gas which is believed to be there.
