Whilst M&S might be going great guns, the problem from now until the next update is the performance of others. Kingfisher is probably weighing on the sector/price today and so are others. We need an analyst or someone to say that M&S is likely taking market share and outperforming the others, otherwise we will drift along with other similar stocks. If it drifts down then any positive news from an update might only bring it back to where it has been recently.

Dire October numbers could possibly indicate a huge rebound over Xmas. Watching CNBC this morning and Karen Tso commented that regardless of these figures every time she goes into M&S it’s always packed 😁

One thing that attracted me to M&S was news a couple of years ago about interest from the private equity company Apollo Global Management. When M&S appointed Cheryl Potter to the board last year this made my ears prick up. On her appointment, Archie Norman described her as "a superstar of the private equity world". I was already invested in M&S but I couldn't help thinking that maybe appointing a PE insider could help them get the best deal in the future.

@jds15 I agree, but if you look at the presentation on their website now it's changed. Maybe they read our comments ;-)

Just quickly looked at the Stuart Machin performance review part of the presentation. Got to be honest that I’m not that impressed :-( “We said” repeats itself and the “we’ve done” gives the impression that they are underachieving, which is clearly not the case. Starts with plenty of green but then lots of red.

Curious to get your thoughts on this:

There’s much talk on here about £5 next year but can we be sure that M&S can generate enough earnings to keep its PE respectable? M&S is currently trading at 16 PE but if I pick 2 others like Tesco 13 and Next 15 then could M&S become expensive or could the earnings growth (which f kept at current pace) be enough to keep it in check? I’m no expert hence the question

I think we’ll find it trading sideways with the risk to the downside between now and results day. Hope I’m wrong though

Any thought on dress the nation on itv? I can’t watch it from outside the UK so was wondering if they promote M&S and if it’s creating a buzz? I read earlier that the prize is a top fashion designer job at M&S which could be a very clever marketing strategy.

I can't have an opinion on M&S apart from news stories as I no longer live in the UK so I was wondering if people's general opinion is that they have seen real improvements in all their offerings. Towards the backend of 2020 I was looking for a retail company to invest in so in my research I stumbled across M&S. I decided to have a look at Facebook to see people's opinions on their posts and I was amazed to discover they had over 5 million followers! I was also amazed at how many views, likes & positive comments their Xmas food posts were getting so I thought I would dip my toe and TBH have never looked back (apart from 2022 which wasn't so good as I tend to trade my stocks but always keeping a position). I've seen that they are now venturing out a little and also want to tidy up their homeware offerings. What are you guys seeing in the shops? Do people, young & old, talk about M&S a lot more now? I'm already at the top end of how much I invest in a single stock but am tempted to add more.

2021 Aug 20th: M&S updated the market on the 1st 19 wks - stock went up

2022 Aug: no update - stock went down and didn't recover back until Jan

2023 Aug 15th: trading update 1st 19 wks - stock went up

2024 Aug: no update to date

Anybody got any comments? Looks as though they only want to update on the good news
