Sunday share tips: Vodafone, Carnival, LiteBulb

Sun, 22nd Dec 2013 17:19

Things are going to get more exciting for Vodafone in 2014 after the mobile phone company agreed to sell its stake in Verizon Wireless, the Sunday Times's Danny Fortson wrote in his Inside the City column. Vodafone now looks digestible for potential bidders. AT&T is rumoured to be interested and an approach would light up Vodafone's share price. With £21bn available for purchases of his own, Vodafone boss Vittorio Colao has made it clear he is on the lookout for deals. Fortson did not offer a prediction on how things would go but he said the key consideration for investors thinking of buying the shares now is how much faith they have in Colao.Buy shares of cruise operator Carnival if you are feeling adventurous, the Sunday Telegraph's Questor column advised. Its shares have risen after it announced better-than-forecast trading. The owner of the Costa Concordia, which sank off the coast of Italy in early 2012, was upbeat about its prospects, based on the scale it has compared with competitors. Business has been poor in recent years as holidaymakers' incomes have been squeezed. But if the oil price falls next year, reducing fuel costs, it could stage a longer recovery.Buy shares of Aim-listed LiteBulb, the Mail on Sunday's Midas column recommended. The gift company makes its own products which are useful and fun, such as personalised number plates for children's bicycles and oak double-tiered egg racks. It works with major brands such as Disney and Miramax and has built up a strong base of relationships with Marks & Spencer, Tesco and other big retailers. At 0.735p a share, it is a true penny stock but the company should grow over the next two years. Hold on to shares of Serco, the troubled outsourcing provider, the Sunday Telegraph's Questor column said. Serco has had a year to forget. It has been forced to settle with the UK government, its biggest customer, over allegations of fraudulent charging for prison tagging services and has lost its chief executive. But once it has proved that its ways are mended, Serco may be in a position to win new contracts. At 11 times earnings its shares are cheap, it has plenty of orders and, though cashflow may be squeezed, its dividend provides a further reason to stick with the shares.SFPlease note: Digital Look provides a round-up of news, tips and information that is impacting share prices and the market.
