Manx To Launch 4G Service For Pay-As-You-Go Customers From Early 2015

Wed, 29th Oct 2014 12:07

LONDON (Alliance News) - Manx Telecom PLC Wednesday said its pay-as-you-go customers in the Isle of Man will be able to use 4G from early 2015.

Manx Telecom launched the first 4G network on the island in July, but it is currently only available to its pay monthly smartphone tariff customers. The company has decided to introduce the service to its other customers as 4G customers use 3.5 times as much data on a daily basis compared with 3G customers, it said in a statement.

The introduction of the 4G service has also driven a 28% increase in mobile data usage for pay monthly subscribers, with over 88% of pay monthly customers choosing a 4G smartphone tariff when renewing or taking out new contracts, it added.

Its technology partner, Huawei, conducted tests across the island in October and showed that 4G speeds were ten times faster than 3G speeds on the island, and confirmed that Manx had provided a 4G service that covers 95% of the population on the island, compared to EE's 75% 4G coverage, it said in a statement.

"This will allow even more customers to experience superfast 4G mobile broadband speeds for themselves. This means that Pay As You Go customers will be able to download video and audio content faster, stream HD video with little to no buffering, as well as upload photos and videos to social media almost instantaneously," said Marketing Director David Smith.

Manx shares were up 0.3% to 179.00 pence per share Wednesday afternoon.
