UPDATE: UK's Cameron Understands Frustration Over BP Spill

Tue, 20th Jul 2010 20:18

(Adds comments from Cameron and Obama.) By Jared A. Favole Of DOW JONES NEWSWIRES WASHINGTON (Dow Jones)--U.K. Prime Minister David Cameron, flanked by U.S. President Barack Obama, on Tuesday said he understands the deep frustration Americans have with U.K. oil giant BP Plc (BP, BP.LN) over the Gulf of Mexico disaster and said he has asked his cabinet secretary to consider releasing more information about the Lockerbie-bomber case. "I completely understand the anger that exists right across America," he said at a press conference during his first official visit to the White House. He added, "The oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is a catastrophe, for the environment, for the fishing industry, for tourism." He said BP should "rightly be blamed" for the spill. The Gulf oil spill was one of two hot-button issues the world leaders discussed. The other was the Scottish government's release last year of convicted Lockerbie bomber Abdel Baset al-Megrahi. Cameron and Obama repeatedly condemned the Scottish government's decision to release al-Megrahi. Cameron said he wants the U.K. cabinet secretary to review whether any further information about the Lockerbie case should be released. He and Obama stopped short of calling for a full review of the decision, saying it would be unnecessary. "I don't need an inquiry to tell me what was a bad decision. It was a bad decision," Cameron said. He said al-Megrahi was the "biggest mass murderer" in British history. Cameron was also asked whether BP had lobbied the U.K. government to release al-Megrahi because of business dealings the oil giant had in Libya, where al-Megrahi now resides. Cameron said BP should answer questions about any lobbying related to the Lockerbie bomber. He added, "I haven't seen anything to suggest that Scottish" government was swayed at all by BP lobbying. Regarding the Gulf disaster, BP is taking steps to cap the well and pay for damages done to people who rely on the Gulf, Cameron said. -By Jared A.
