You are completely right ThenShen. Corrib and Kinsale were massive finds that kept the lights on in Ireland for decades. Corrib could hold a lot more gas and Barryroe is the largest oil field in Europe. Ryan and the Green party are against oil and gas so are looking for reasons not to allow drilling go ahead. Once the first black outs happen people will become more engaged in the conversation around energy. It is beginning to be recognised that oil and gas has to be a backup to the renewables if you rule out nuclear. This fact may be become an accepted fact by the government and RTE in a few months. It may also happen that Barryroe will be mentioned for the first time on RTE as a resource that is sitting in the ground while people go cold.
Battle,Ryan's assertion that only 3 or 4 wells from 160 drilled were successful, should be challenged.Technology has moved on greatly with current success rates now being 30% - 40%..
From Westwood Global Energy Group :
Exploration performance improved from a low in 2015, with just a 6% commercial success rate (CSR) from 32 exploration wells drilled, to an average of 23% over the five-year period.Dated 30 Jun 2020.
Eamon Ryan's response to Senator Alice - Mary Higgins.
The Senator is right. Her concerns have been heightened this year because of an Italian decision, of which she is fully aware, regarding compensation being provided to a UK operator that bought an interest in that. I do not believe the same circumstances apply in the Irish context. The difficulty in the Energy Charter Treaty, as the Senator knows, is that there is a 20-year period within which, even if one opted out, one is still locked into the system. The best way of working and dealing with this is working with our colleagues across Europe so that we reform and make sure, and this is what was centre stage in the negotiations that went through this summer, that nothing in an Energy Charter Treaty can impede or hinder decarbonisation efforts, because that is not acceptable. The best way and the strongest way of addressing that is through a European approach, which we do work on.
Thank you for posting the link. Here is Eamon Ryan response to Senator Tim Lombard question.
On the potential role of offshore exploration, many commentators are saying that if only we had offshore oil and gas exploration, we would be out of this problem. I do not believe that is true. Of the 160 or 170 times we have drilled at real expense for hydrocarbons, we found them to be commercial three or four times. The easier and more obvious sites have been picked so everything after this is a 50:1 outside bet, hugely expensive and is not the future. It does not give us security and is not likely to deliver gas or oil any time soon.
As I said, the State sticks to what it says. We said we would not issue any new licences, we would treat all of the existing licences within the terms of those licences and we would do exactly what we have always done to assess the ability of the developers to adhere to the conditions of the licence, as set out in legislation. This is what my Department has correctly done and will continue to do. There is no favour shown and no straying from the provisions we have already provided for but there is no certainty that would deliver even if a project were to proceed.

Nothing to do with Ryan of course , https://www.businesspost.ie/politics/stand-off-over-power-supply-crisis-shows-just-how-bad-the-situation-is/
Headline in UK Daily Mail today "Blackout Britain?"
Predictions of blackouts in the UK this winter due to shortage of gas and electricity due to dependence on "renewables" when the sun does not shine and there is no wind.
If the UK is short of power why would they send Ireland gas from Moffat? Surely they will want it all for themselves?
Article:
Families may be asked to cut their energy usage this winter to avoid blackouts if the weather 'doesn't go in our favour', an energy expert has warned. Kathryn Porter, an energy consultant at Watt-Logic has said that due to the replacement of thermal and nuclear generation with intermittent renewable's, such as wind power, weather variables such as a lack of wind could 'leave us vulnerable'. Speaking today on World at One on Radio 4, Ms Porter explained that it's 'very possible' the UK will see plans for energy rationing. With similar schemes in California and Texas - Ms Porter expects that authorities could ask consumers to reduce their use of electricity during certain hours and give advice on how that could be done. This could be anything from asking people to have dinner earlier or later and to avoid using larger appliances like washing machines during peak hours. 'I think it would be voluntary rather than compulsory', the energy expert said. "
Eamon Ryan lives in cloud cuckoo land if he thinks they will send plenty of gas on to us when they are short. They will want it all for themselves and we will freeze thanks to a nutter.
So build a power plant -fine.
Import gas to power it - not the most environmentally responsible
Ignore homegrown gas for a gas project- hypocrisy
Ryan is destroying Irish people and Irish economy
What a hypocrite. Ryan running for cover.
Where are his renewables credentials given the following as reported today in today's Irish Times under the headline "State seeks permission for emergency power plants".
"Meanwhile, Eamon Ryan, Minister for the Environment, Climate and Communications, has also applied to An Bord Pleanála for permission to build a temporary emergency gas-fired electricity plant on ESB property at North Wall in Dublin.
Documents filed with his application show the proposed plant will have six turbines and run from 2023 to late 2027."
And he is going to build it in a year.
And, given his comments on Tuesday, when is it ever the business of the government how much it costs to drill a well and his comments that 130 wells have been drilled in Ireland with 3 finds fades into total insignificance when you consider they drilled 6,000 in the North Sea.
What an absolute gob****e.
It would appear the first major announcement post the CEPA energy security is only a few days away,..GL S
State-owned storage and non-commercial Liquefied Natural Gas terminal among energy security review options
Long-awaited review to be published next week amid concerns for gas security across Europe
The construction of a state-owned gas storage facility, and a non-commercial Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) import terminal are to be recommended as part of an energy security review to be published next week, the Business Post can reveal.
Following its publication, Eamon Ryan, the Minister for the Environment, is to launch a consultation on the proposed options, before deciding on a final government policy in early 2023.
Today, Ryan told reporters in Dublin that the government would have to consider some form of gas storage in Ireland in the future. The review, which was carried out by CEPA, the economic consultancy firm, on behalf of the Department of Environment, Climate, and Communications, was first commissioned in 2019 by then-Minister Richard Bruton to assess the security of Ireland’s gas and electricity systems.

DB, I would have to listen back myself to capture the time line, plus we should have the transcript fairly soon and that will be easier to navigate than having to listen back,
In relation to supporting existing licensing, the response from Ryan to Senator Tim Lombard, was the most pertinent, along with his derisory comments regarding Ireland’s offshore exploration, both provide the company with a perfect opportunity to respond publicly to the farcical situation we find ourselves in, …GL S
Michael McDowell hits the nail on the head in his article in The Irish Times today,…
“We are a grand little country facing gas shortages for another 30 years. No LNG terminal to be built; no gasfields to be explored……Let’s get real.”
Swiss, you are surely right about Ryan mentioning some "ECT arbitration", I needed several pastis re-fills during the 3 hrs & 50 mins hearing, for medicinal purposes. Any idea of the time stamp, for a re-listen ?
Was astonished how Ryan repeatedly insisted on maintaining all energy commitments made to permitted Data Centres, whilst at the same time, he totally ignores/delays/frustrates all the legally valid exploration licences. Manyana, is right on this one, they take the licence fee but deny any & all progress, so that's just one more reason to sue the Republic of Ireland under the ECT for EOG/Inishkea & for PVR using Irish/EU law for Barryroe.
Also amazed to hear almost nothing about oil, petrol, diesel & coal, the most used sources of energy in Ireland.
Why were the oil, gas & coal industries not represented, if the title of this hearing is to be believed.
The lunatics are most certainly in charge of the asylum.

I would confess I thought Ryan did mention the Rockhopper and Italian arbitration award, although he didn’t mention Rockhopper by name, what was very evident is that the CEPA energy security report has been received by Ryan and he did acknowledge that LNG storage will be reviewed as a recommendation of CEPA, it would not be a huge surprise if the development of indigenous O&G resources is another energy security recommendation of CEPA, the fact that they are engaging with Nephin is a good indicator of that, plus the comments in regards to supporting previous government commitments, should be taken as a positive and encouraging sign for the Providence and Lansdowne boards, not that there was any question in regards to their legal entitlement of the LU, he clearly needs the political cover to pacify the more extreme in his party and I would suggest he now has that in abundance and I would expect a few more snippets from the CEPA report will be leaked in the days ahead to create the political environment for a number of major announcements, …GL S

May take a while to be up loaded.
After 3 hrs & 40 mins of electricity only experts, circle jerking, Senator Tim Lombard from Cork, earned his crust & finally asked questions about Inishkea & more directly about native Barryroe oil & gas for energy security, plus old Kinsale pipeline usage.
Ryan, who I must say, generally spoke quite well, except when the eyes went all swively, when totally lying.
He stated, he believes after 130 well drilled, only 3 commercial finds in Irish waters, so only a 50/1 chance of finding oil or gas in Ireland, so its only a waste of money to drill more, etc, etc, though he will honour all existing licences !!!! My Arse.
Several mentions of the ECT (Energy Charter Treaty) but only related to leaving it, Ryan prefers to move in step with EU to change the ECT to ease the rise of renewables, "no mention" of the Rockhopper €190 million plus interest, ~ € 250€ M.
All to foolish to know, like Italy, that it takes 10 years to exit the legal recourse from being a member.
And if Ryan thinks that being clever & not denying the licence, but never authorising them, the way he put Inishkea in Licence Limbo, he obviously has not read the Vattenfal decision. Unnecessary delays & opaque decision making, are full grounds for an ECT case.

Is Barryroe it for PVR ? does the company have anything of interest anywhere else that they can get on with ? been here a long long time waiting but thinking the end is near , the only hope i see of any money would be a RKH type of win if PVR take the Irish government to court.
I'd be happy to see a *legal* approach. Explorers are entitled to progress existing licenses. Ryan can't run DECC as his personal fiefdom, deciding what to grant at his personal ideological whim. Somebody needs to remind him of that, and quick.
Perhaps we are finally going to see a pragmatic approach towards Ireland’s indigenous resources,..GL S
Energy crisis: Corrib gas field operator tells Taoiseach Michéal Martin they can extract fuel for another decade
Plan won’t help alleviate concern about about blackouts this winter but it may reduce the dependence on imports in the future
https://www.independent.ie/irish-news/energy-crisis-corrib-gas-field-operator-tells-taoiseach-micheal-martin-they-can-extract-fuel-for-another-decade-41945944.html
This is misleading from the regulator.
The facts are that on one of the days of an amber alert this summer renewables made up just over 1% of the energy generated for the grid on that very day.
The facts are clear.
Our electricity grid relies on gas for both the majority of its supply and for reliable supply.
Moreover we rely on British Gas which I’m sure as The Sunday atimes eluded to yesterday will not suit the republican narrative of Sinn Féin.
Supply is a much bigger strategic issue for Ireland than price.
Surely civil servants will recognise their duty of care to Irish people this autumn and force policy makers to grant licence extensions that are in fact in the program for government
An absolutely astonishing admission of failure from Aoife MacEvilly and it makes you wonder how far the green party’s ludicrous ideology, in regards to energy security and energy transition has infiltrated the key offices of the energy sector and the civil service in Ireland?, it’s also very evident that the Russian and Ukrainian crisis is going to be played on repeat as the root cause of the crisis, hopefully the political debate will intensify to call out this ridiculous line of defence,...GL S

Barry Cowen, TD for Laois-Offaly is not too happy with, amongst others, The Department for the Environment, aka Eamon Ryan as he says they have all been "sleeping at the wheel".
Quote:
TD Barry Cowen says he is pointing the finger firmly at the axis of ESB, Eirgrid, the Commission for the Regulation of Utilities (CRU) and Department of the Environment.
The Department, EirGrid and CRU are “all asleep at the wheel”, Cowen told The Journal, stating that the generation shortage “has now spiralled out of control”.
Will he put pressure on Ryan when they hold the Energy Meeting which will be held on Tuesday 30th August at 12.00 in CR3 or will it be the usual bluff and bluster?
You can watch it live at
https://www.oireachtas.ie/en/oireachtas-tv/cr3-live/
Do Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael seriously think the are building their respective parties against Sinn Féin for the next election? Time to ditch this Green cult and bring back common sense.
Man .... his for the birds anyway ... with a loyal small god like following ... his worst than that guy in Waco Texas long go ....
It seems Ryan refused a meeting with the developer who wanted to develop the LNG terminal in Shannon even though Varadkar met him.
https://www.independent.ie/irish-news/billionaire-gas-backer-secured-meeting-with-leo-varadkar-about-shannon-project-after-eamon-ryan-turned-him-down-41940903.html
It seems numerous Fine Gael and Fine Fail politicians supported the Shannon LNG project. Will they vote against the government if it comes to a vote in the Dail?
I reckon one blackout in the winter and Ryan is for the birds.
Huge price increases in electricity and gas announced.
https://www.independent.ie/business/personal-finance/leading-energy-supplier-announces-massive-hikes-in-electricity-and-gas-prices-41939438.html
And Liz Truss announces she is going to permit "fracking" if she is elected. So will Ryan allow UK "fracked" gas to come to Ireland?
He has a lot of questions to answer tomorrow when he is quizzed. "Oireachtas committee will question the minister and the CRU at urgent meeting prompted by concerns over energy security ".
Will he finally be backed into a corner where he is truly seen for the gob****e he really is.
Looking forward to some interesting answers.
