There was a small queue for me to enter the Ocado website today as I carried out my weekly shop. It is very rare that this happens. Looks like the public, in the face of the current fuel crisis, is placing a greater demand on Ocado as they try to conserve the use of their precious petrol/diesel and avoid driving to the supermarket. This heightened demand could stay in place for a while.
Very complex situation for Ocado to deal with currently. CO2 shortage affecting their ability to deliver frozen goods. This issue looks though to be nearing resolution as fertilizer plants resume production thanks to government subsidy. Fuel shortage could start to affect Ocados ability to deliver groceries although Ocado would have a steadier more stable supply of fuel than the general public. Fuel costs will be rising however these costs will likely be passed back to the customer. The HGV driver shortage affects Ocado less than other online grocers due to their more streamlined operating model.
Overall I think Ocado retail will have sustained increased demand for the coming period and should be able to deliver throughout this new crisis and perform a vital service for customers.
all good points Value.....roads have been much quieter today as people conserve their fuel (or daren't go out looking for fuel) .Quite a few challenges ahead for our business and the country .I'm really worried about inflation...fast becoming entranched at 4.8% (retail price index)
Many worries for the UK government. Focussing on Ocado though rising inflation costs should be passed back to customers. Rate rises are a concern as Ocado will need to raise finance roughly at end of 2022 - rate rise expectations though are still very subdued.
The new 50% increase in Ocado retail capacity is coming on stream at a very good time...
I think the fuel shortage will only last a few more days - it was media driven and only created by panic buying - oil suppliers will prioritise their larger outlets first to get supplies running freely.
Possibly chilting, I think it will last some days longer than that. Either way it doesn't instill confidence. Many will switch to online grocery in the short term worrying that the fuel shortage could return again after this current situation is resolved.
As most delivery drivers are new to Ocado, Tesco etc they don't have as much loyalty as in store staff. With rising wages in the HGV space there could be consequences on rising costs for home delivery.
Also, as Tesco, ASDA etc are far bigger than Ocado they could be prioritised for home delivery causing even more delays in Ocados delivery service.
These two factors will eat into any profit that Ocado is predicted to make.
No problem recruiting drivers for home delivery - not classified as HGV - also well paid.
I agree they aren't classified as HGV, but home delivery drivers are nowhere near as well paid as HGV and will end up leaving if they can earn substantially more as a HGV driver, which will be the case.
You are missing the point. They cannot just leave and drive HGV's as they do not have the required qualification to do so. They would have to train up just like any other HGV driver and that is the root of the problem we have. Anyone can drive a delivery van, not so an HGV. Oh and removing the requirement that the training HGV driver is capable of reversing an HGV rig as part of the qualifying test is not a solution to fast tracking the exam! It will just lead to more problems in practice.
Who is suggesting removing any of the standards?
Those that are already driving as part of their job will be inclined up skill if the compensation and job security warrants it.

If they have removed standards then it only increases my fear that costs for Ocado will increase.
Ocado will be hit with delays to their delivery disguised as "increase demand". The proof will be in their profits.
When are they predicted to make a profit?
