barchid, did think of you and wondered if you were already there(SA). NZ announced this week they are opening borders from February, initially for Kiwi Passport holders and for Foreign visitors from April. I was hoping to make a trip even though April is getting into their Autumn. That possibilty looks to be getting doubtful.
Back to Marstons, am keeping my powder dry waiting to see how good the figures are next week. Am not expecting a miracle but there may be green shoots. Although it gets talked about a lot here many forget the brewery is only 40% ours, knowing how cagey Carlsberg is, it will be interesting to see the results from that quarter. It is no secret input and distribution costs have risen considerably.
If we match M&B's performance that will be an achievement.
You are right the Welsh Government have a totllay different approach in dealing with Covid. Restrictions are expected.
FD/Trent
Gents, it might make you chuckle on a down day like this to know that I bought 3 tickets to go to SA end December yesterday after leaving it a while to let the "off the red list" settle down and transfers through the airport became quicker. Seats were starting to sell fast so I thought better book now...
3 hours after buying them I heard the first whispers of going back on the red list, not exactly precision timing eh ?
Back to MARS, I really don't see a second lockdown coming in England (Wales is a possibility though) so I guess this is not a bad time to average, although there are probably better sectors to be investing in now than hospitality. Meanwhile my dream of cans of Castle beer on the beach is a long way away, sadly !
Might show if during the pandemic off sales have increased from home deliveries. We will determine more next week if the reaction to the Marston's share price has been an overreaction. In the meantime good time to buy the dips lots of money to be made in the market at the moment for the longer term.
The fear factor is probably the main reason. Make no mistake this "New" variant will spread to other countries. It is all very well halting flights from the named countries, however, and do not be under any doubt, there are and will be travellers who find a way to get to the UK and then bingo, we have the variant here. NZ regarded as introducing the most effective means of keeping the disease out, have failed, so what chance has Europe.
Not a good scenario. Let's hope Christmas is not abandoned again. God that would be devastating.
morning Trent
Yes I remember it gave me a decent 'chuckle of the day' moment :)
Anyway
Yes geninue concern about the news coming out of SA
Kind Regards
Jimster
Apologies folks.
I was just flicking through LSE without my IG Terminal switched on.
I see it's Armageddon out there this morning - School Boy error.
Yes, the whole Sector has been walloped.
I wonder if the Private Equity Guys still have it lined up in their sights? Though any other lockdown situation could tip many of these company's over the edge.
Just looking myself.
Whitbread have been smashed as well so I think it's a read-through on the new Covid variant.
@ Fairdealer. I'm not sure mate.It could well equally be all above board, and he something as straightforward as a clerical error. I really don't know. I'll ignore the dark side of my mind and immediately think something is afoot.
I'm not trying to scare anyone either, My intention was to put a note up here on the subject in case anyone else here was in there and was not aware of it for any reason that was all.
Trent not a company that I am familar with, but have just done an overview. It does appear odd for a Transport co when haulage services are at a premium.
Maybe they have lost drivers and consequently contracts, who knows. I guess the SP came off it's bottom when the CEO purchased over half a million shares. He either has complete confidence or is building a position
The problem for LOgistics co's they have vehicles and trailers on Leasing agreements, to retain drivers wages have
gone through the roof to say nothing of increased fuel costs.
Would be good to know a few drivers??? Otherwise wait and see
I meant that it was during the hgv shortage that somehow converted to oil shortages. And how we should start a beer shortage rumour Jimster. :-)
*It might have been me, not starlight it might be me. Popular as to the mood of feeling on this board might be, I'm not really THAT interesting I'm sorry to say.
I think starlight have been me, JimsterJimste roughly at the time when HTC driver shortages somehow converted to oil shortages.
On an unrelated note, has anyone seen the rumblings within DX. today?
I was in there with a small holding up until this morning when I bailed.
I'm short, there seems to be a discrepancy within accounting announced within an RNS today with an announcement that trading the share is possibly going to be suspended in January. With that, it lost a fair bit of it's value throughout the day.
It may well be nothing, but if anyone here is in there too, you may want to look into it and evaluate the script for yourself.
This with a Director buy later today as well just in my eyes looks a little odd.
As I say, could be nothing, but I don't know. It just smells a bit off to me.
Just so you know if you're in there.
Have posted a profit of £81m to the end of yr (25th September 2021) against a prfit for 2020 of £8m
They have repayed the liquidity faciity of £227m.
All in all decent figures lets trust MARS will follow suit next Tuesday.
All being well when VAT increases we'll be back to normal trading conditions and so is the SP.
Popped in my local again last night and only one table free, lots of locals in, book club in full force, Christmas decorations up !
Positive update next week and we can get this SP back on the road !
Someone mentioned 'panic buying beer' as an idea to resurrect the share price a month or so back
Now here it is for real
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-59399754 ( yesterday )
Everyone shifting to beer for the end of year break....ha ha...good times
Have fun everyone
The Original Jimster
The 2p will be swallowed up by the 7.5% Vat increase ( on i's way back to 20% next spring).
We will have a better idea of the Co's performance next Tuesday when final accounts are released.
If this goes sub 70p I'll be buying more.
I see nothing to suggest a restricted Christmas is going to happen. Yes, cases were always going to go up over winter but the key metric is the number of hospital admissions which has remained consistent since July.
My local Marstons is thriving, put a couple of pence on a pint recently though but as a share holder this doesn't bother me as this time next year Rodders we'll be millionaires !
Northern Ireland restrictions now confirmed...
The hospitality industry cannot afford another restricted Christmas period!
Looking grim.
@ Barchid. A very thoughtful post. Not much there that I disagree with to be fair.
I'm not really in any rush to offload, as I don't need the money for anything in particular, nor do I think anything untoward is going on, but I am beginning to question when my humble holding here is going to restart paying it's way. As much as I like the company and it's brands, I'd still like to see it pulling it's weight.
Trent/DA & FD
As you may remember I posted a year or so ago that due to an unexpectedly heavy tax bill I sold a large part of mine late 2019, early 2020, not because I was smart but I took a profit as I needed the liquidity.
Those I still hold is because I like their beer, but longer I hold them more I question the management.
I bought them originally for the brewery, not the pubs, tbh, but now we don't run the brewery which is a fundamental issue.
WRT superdischarger a "strong bull" on everything, having sold his at just under 50p (his post) & bought them back 80% higher he clearly is not half as super as he thought.
Added to that he tried to boast about his RR shares even on this board, which were supposedly going through £2 very swiftly, sadly still low 130p's and Hochscild which he puffed continuously are seriously down the drain, high of over 250p in Jan, trading at 114p today, perhaps he had a family member working there like he claimed at MARS ?
Then his acolyte, the "patronised" Jimster, who was "unaware" of the likelihood that MARS won't be paying a meaningful divi until the debt is reduced is surely the icing on a rather stale puffers cake ?
So don't be depressed about MARS currently, "it's never as good as it looks it's never as bad as it looks" is a very good stock market saying.
Sadly the "puffing Billies" on this board seem to think we are all dopes.
Perhaps we are but I think they beat us to that trophy !
@ Fairdealer. I never thought I'd say it either, but we've just seem to have flat lined here, haven't we?
I know that all of the ball locks with Covid and lockdowns have done most companies over like a kipper, (except food producers & retailers of course). Which is why I've been happy to ride it out.
But we've been out of that for a number of months now, and I was hoping to see some glimmor of increased demand for the pub etc etc etc,but I've not seen much to blow me away. I'm hoping that the Christmas & New year trading figures does something to take a different view. We shall see.
@DarkArches, luckily, like most on this board, I know enough about Supercharger's comments to take both him and his comments with a pinch of salt.
Trent, no doubt the resident supercharging carrot salesman will be along soon enough to dangle away. Just be sure to check the use-by on them.
Trent never though I would read your disenchantment here. Know you re-invested the divs, which were an income attraction for many LTH's. As wolfwatch confirms I cannot see restoration of shareholder payments anytime soon. Hope that is proved wrong, figures next week will give a clue.
I reckon there are better opportunities in the sector.
We are like mushrooms!!!!
I think you have a point Wolfwatch. I can't see a dividend here for some time myself to be fair. I'm hoping to see some encouraging trading news here at some point in the new year from the Christmas trading fortnight. Personally, I'm starting to struggle to see the dangling carrot of holding here at the moment.
