Longwait: your understanding is not wrong. What I find particularly irksome is how misinformation whether intentionally or through particular malicious intent can lead some people to act irrationally. What bothered me was a poster earlier insinuating that there were loads of Chinese in a particular part of Italy and that should be a cause for concern.
That kind of thinking is stupid, and leads to racism and xenophobia. It helps no one. The examples I gave of how the virus is spreading around Europe and outside of China shows that focussing on one group of people within a country will not stop the coronavirus or keep people safe. There are several hundred cases now across Europe, only a tiny % of the European cases have been to China or are Chinese.
Writing on phone so can't insert quotes.
But wrt Brexit. The UK IS now out, irrevocably, and yes, changes have already happened for some people.
I live in France, and could vote in local or national elections, had I wished to (which I don't). Now I cannot (which doesn't bother me a bit!).
There's at least one 'commune' in France with a British mayor, and countless others with British people on the council. Unless these people have applied for, and already obtained either dual-nationality or Frech citizenship, they willl not be able to stand in municipal elections, which are in acouple of weeks' time.
No doubt the same applies in other EU countries.
I've read several reports and my understanding is that the virus originated in China, was brought to Italy from China, and is being spread from Italy to other countries in Europe.
extrader: The fact there may be alot of Chinese working in Italy is neither here nor there. The coronavirus can spread from anyone to anyone. It could have been brought to Italy by anyone too.
In all likelihood the Chinese working in Italy most likely have not gone back and visited China since the outbreak as that wouldn't be very wise to do, especially if they hail from an affected area of China.
Take for example it was a British man living in Brighton who brought it first back to the UK after he went on a business trip to Singapore and picked it up there.
It was an Italian doctor on holiday to Tenerife that brought it to Tenerife a few days ago
It was a Japanese salesman who brought it back to Japan after a visit to Wuhan and became the first confirmed case in Japan back in mid January
There first 2 cases in Austria were Italians from Lombardy
In Afghanistan, their first case is somebody who returned from Iran
In Iraq, all of their cases appear to be related to people returning from Iran
In Kuwait, all of their cases appear to be related to people returning from Iran too
wessexmario: well said. Nothing changes between pre 31/01/2020 and 31/12/20. Brexiteers endlessly carping on about everything being rosy should take note of that. What happens at the end of transition is what matters. We can't predict the future, but one this is for sure - there will be change come 01/01/2021.
Hi CaptainSwag,
.."I was in florence and there were lots and I mean lots of chinese people. …"
There are allegedly a lot of Chinese working in the Italian fashion sector, making in 'sweatshops' the full range of 'Italian' prestige shoes, scarfs and hand-bags that the Chinese won't buy at home, because they might be counterfeit.....
Or so I'm told , by a friend in the fashion sector.....exploiter, not exploitee, I should add.
I suppose it's some kind of karmic justice.

Prize for Ramp of the Month goes to John for his comment:
'Just got back in and quite excited to see the SP > 15p.'
That was daring of you, John!
Possibly even more daring is OilbeBack.
I too noticed that Brent is back at $55 and WTI above $50, but thought it might be frowned upon if I mentioned it in the current climate.
I just read an article about the virus and world economy.
I won't provide the link.
How bad was the prognosis?
Well, after finishing reading it, I looked out of the window to check the world was still there.
Just got back in and quite excited to see the SP > 15p. If you'd told me 3 months ago this would be the case I would have assumed there must have been a share split along the way or catastrophically bad news. Neither of which is the case.
Anyone know how long to expect the AM to be with her friend if she was as full as we hope?
Let's just put it this way,
While we are in the "transition period" (31 January to 31 December 2020)
Legally we are no longer a member of the EU.
Practically very little changes until 01 January 2021.
After that date we'll find out who was right!
http://hastheuklefttheeuyet.com
ft says yes
lettlened: Depends how you look at it. Technically we're still in the EU and remain so until the end of the transition period. During transition absolutely zero changes, meaning we are still exactly where we were prior to 31st of Jan (minus the withdrawal agreement which put us into the transition period and will see the UK leave all the benefits or disadvantages (depends if you're a brexiteer or remainer) and the end of 2020.
oh yes we have ! 31st January 2020.Where were you ?
We have not left the EU yet....
They also predicted doom and gloom just if we voted for Brexit never mind actually exiting which we did last month.Who would believe 'experts' eh
personally I think the coronavirus will be a significant issue. it seems to have about a 10% mortality rate - and as others have mentioned it will be old and weak who are most at risk.
i came back from italy 2 weeks ago - and i am not surprised that it has caught them bad. I was in florence and there were lots and I mean lots of chinese people. I did wonder if they were all tourists or if people hadn't got out quick while they could..They were already measuring temperature of arrivals but presumably this wouldn't show up in early stages? in addition every journey i took had all the italians around me suffering from cold/ flu etc.. seems they don't take cold weather well.
the reality is it will hit the market - and people will make money from a dip - but my prediction is normal service will be resumed. we still have to eat work heat our homes etc. life goes on and the market goes on.
Since you nearly gave your age away, John, you must remember 9/11 and the media mantra of the time, 'The world will never be the same again.'
The world has never been the same since hijackings started about half a century ago; hijackings didn't start on 9/11.
You may also remember the leaflet posted by the Government to every household in the UK, around 1986/7, warning about the danger of catching HIV/Aids and the warnings by experts of an epidemic affecting the general population.
Do you remember the Avian Influenza scare too?
People thought they might die if they handled a pigeon.
Maybe this time the media are right, but the headlines are reminiscent of the Second World War:
Coronavirus pushes across Europe and Middle East, while U.S. braces for arrival.
https://www.nytimes.com/2020/02/26/world/asia/coronavirus-news.html#link-388a6523
The media loves the pandemic story. It sells content (nearly gave my age away there by saying it sells papers!). The MMs love coronavirus, it gives them an excuse to move prices/ PoO several percent a day - big movements = big money, doesn't matter which way. Pis are just passengers really.
I'll wager that in 6 months no one will remember how to even spell coronavirus, and by then its remaining effect on markets etc will be negligible or non existent. Every cloud has a silver lining - if the US economy falters significantly maybe we could see the end of Trump as he cant crow about it then ?
There are live updates - to enable us to keep track of the death toll while we monitor the stock market slump, the oil price fall, and the up-to-the minute reports by TLF on water cuts.
Just in case JAdam misinterprets my above sarcasm as deramping, I wasn't sure whose side he was on when I read his last post - especially the final paragraph.
I do, however, agree with him that the media are 'ramping' up the virus story for all it's worth.
There is a report that the mortality rate from the virus is about the same in Italy as it is in China, a statistic I'm sure we will all appreciate, although I imagine we can check the latest Italy-China ratio in live updates.
Yes, most of the dead are old. My age! They were probably ill in some way, anyway. Certainly beats rotting away in a nursing home. Most people who die of ‘flu’ , any sort of ‘flu’, have something wrong with them. The press are scaremongering, as usual.
I am in Tenerife, La Caleta, a few hundred yards from the Italian Dr +wife, are alleged to have the virus. Their hotel is in lockdown as a precaution. No one on this island seems bothered. The rubbish press will turn the word Pandemic into the word ‘Panic’.... if I had the funds, I would be buying this market.
Oh dear LONGWAIT. Older men - there's a few in trouble on this board then
Coronavirus Deaths Are So Far Mostly Older Men, Many With Previous Health Issues
https://www.nytimes.com/2020/01/23/world/asia/coronavirus-victims-wuhan.html
' the world is not telling us any detail, i.e. the people that have died, were these healthy young, or were they the elderly and infirm.'
I read last night a detailed report about deaths from the virus in Italy.
All of the people mentioned were in their 80s and some were already infirm.
I agree with you, JAdam.
The media wasn't always like this.
The Daily Express predicted, following the infamous Munich Agreement of 1938, that there would be no war in Europe in 1938 or 1939.
Nowadays, it displays 'shock' horror headlines every day.
The television coverage of 9/11 was, in my opinion, disgraceful, with the recording of the Twin Towers set to music.
One newspaper published an article suggesting that the War on Terror could be worse than the Second World War.
The media has lost touch with reality.
Today’s drop entirely due to C-V. All independent oil companies getting hammered.
You also have to consider is that hedgefunds struggle in a sideways market they need volatility and events like this are music to their ears.
