Farm land, holy land, family burial sites etc all needs to be given up for a new future. This I imagine would sound amazing to some but equally the end of a historical past to others. There will be many people/ protesters ready and waiting to jump all over this if and thumbs up is given and I’m just not sure if GoB would be willing to take that at this moment.
We the shareholders can provide every reason why this should happen and how this would bring prosperity to the people but, this is obvious. Still, the people remain IMO the main obstacle in this moving forward. I’m not saying you’re wrong in that this should happen but without the locals currently on board this is a long way off.
Good morning bythesea, yes Hasina was the only candidate last time, but times are changing in Bangladesh. The Chinese are a major factor here and in these times of change they will be a major influence in the region and I think that the Bangladeshi government recognises this. With the possibilities of an emerging nation in emerging markets the Bangladeshi 's will want to embrace this change, so a constant supply of electricity is vital to their economy.
I don’t think elections bother them. Wasn’t Hasina the only one running last time after the opposition were “dealt with”?
Also I can't see the Bangladeshi government wanting to pi55 off the Chinese after taking the trouble to court them to invest in their country, as they are invested across Bangladesh not just in one area. Because if they do the Chinese are not the most forgiving nation on earth. And they usually get what they want eventually.
Come General elections, I know that they are not due yet, but if politicians get this wrong, I'm sure that the electorate will not forget who failed them. As regards the indigenous community, they need electricity and need it fast and if that supplies jobs along the way I can't see any reason why they would be opposed to progress on all fronts. I'm sure GCM have people on the ground already and will do their best to reassure the local communities.
I’m really not sure the locals will actually be given the chance to vote on this one. More about convincing them this about enhancing the future of those locals living in and around phulbari and this is the responsibility GCM people on the ground within the community. My point is we just don’t know whether the indigenous people have been convinced this is what they need.
Interesting point 1Earner, although probably the best way to appease the locals, which are incidentally voters as well is to provide employment for these poor unfortunate people who deserve properly paid jobs and electricity to run their companies and homes. Would suspect they could prosper immensely given the opportunity.
Hawkspear I’m hoping you’re right!
Though we do still need to appease locals before voters. We should expect the usual protests on any open pit news. If good news is on the horizon then maybe the government considered this and are happy to wait for the right time, when that is god knows.
TeddyMcTedFace suggested SP won’t be far off IMO
I disagree 1Earner, given what's happened at Barapukuria I think our time will come a lot sooner than a lot of folks think. Wouldn't be surprised if the Bangladeshi government have to come up with something to appease the voters.
Been on a slow wind down so far and I expect to get to the 10-12p range if not 8-11p again. News driven (lack of) and sells going through so no suprise. Boring waiting for this, but we'll know more by mid-October at the latest as the MOU with NFC & PowerChina expires then.
Not great week as got whacked with Boo :(
Wouldn’t be at all surprised if this heads back to March sp...embarrassing
