Some of the more positive vibes from Harding etc that some may have missed.
“Going forward, I think these more rapid turnaround, lower sensitivity and specificity tests that might well be able to tell you you are not infectious for the next few hours could potentially have uses in the future where you are testing to prove that you are negative rather than that you are positive.”
“We are not there yet but there is a lot of research and development going into it.”
She said a reliable, self-administered Covid-19 test that can yield results in as little as 15 minutes is currently the “holy grail” of Covid-19 diagnostics. The UK was investing heavily and investing “ahead of the science” to try and speed along the process of research and development of such a test.
“I think we should be optimistic that over the course of the next few months many of these new technologies will break through, and will demonstrate that they are sufficiently sensitive and specific that they can be used in a variety of cases,” she said.
She added: “They are not here yet and they are not going to solve our problems this week but we are investing heavily.”
Also 10th Sept a spokesperson for the Department of Health and Social Care said, “This country now has the capacity to test for coronavirus on an unprecedented scale, and we are going further by investing £500m in next generation tests, like saliva tests and rapid turnaround tests that can deliver results in just 20 minutes.
“We are increasing capacity to 500?000 tests a day by the end of October, and the ability to get rapid, on-the-spot results will significantly increase our ability to fight coronavirus, stop the spread, and for our economy to recover.”

I think the government want lots of people tested. I'll put money on
1. Companies who require people to work on company premesis will be expected to adopt testing as part of H&S.
2. Government testing will be provided FOC in high risk groups. Care homes, hospitals, blue light.
3. Trusting of geographical areas will be performed at govt expense
cost to the tax payer of people spreading the virus in massive. If you are sick all sorts of tax implications from payrole, VAT plus the cost of people to look after you. Sure you cant just rock up and ask for a test maybe (in Stockholm we can), but supplying test to general public from public funds would be better than letting the virus have full rein. If you are a business and need to ensure people are ok coming into your premises, sure business would pay, but attacking the virus is governments responsibility!
Who does the term freeloader cover ? Companies paying dividends and share buy backs back so they have no cash in bank and need public support, bankers who get a bonus to lose money in my pension funds ? But yep lets not supply free tests to people who are on minimum wage so I can have clean hospital floors, or a cheap burger, or a nurse to take my blood pressure. Let them keep on spreading the virus, just so long as the tax payer doesn't need to fork out money. Do you see any drawback in your argument ?
I seem to remember a lot of people were excited about the orange baby buying tests right from the get go. Private company supply was not the top of my investment list.
Market is looking for Sales/Orders now. Little else is going to shift these Covid bases sp’s.
Should have also added that the price to do this is an absolute drop in the ocean compared to the cost of continuing as we are - when the Avacta test is confirmed and available in mass they will have no choice but to give the order
If the government are serious about clearing COVID from the uk they will simply have to fund and provide Antigen Home self tests for everyone - people will not pay for tests they feel they don’t need and want, this is the uk here many have zero respect for covid and the government
There are no 2 ways about it, they will fund the whole exercise to screen the entire population pinpointing and isolating where applicable or the uk will have to live with the current covid Situation for the next 2 to 5 years minimum
Speaking as a taxpayer I think it's hugely shortsighted not to include the asymptomatic as that's how the virus is spreading. This will result in it being dragged out for longer and further damage to the economy and ultimate taxpayers. They should test everyone at least weekly through the winter and scale it back once monitoring and an effective app is in place.
Dido Harding pretty much confirmed yesterday that the NHS will be writing out MASSIVE contracts to purchase tests for MOONSHOT. She said
1) People with no coronavirus symptoms will have to pay for 'Operation Moonshot' tests, the head of the government's testing programme has said.
Wow!!! So then, just as the 6 month cold/flu season is getting underway, Dido has inferred that anyone with Covid symptoms will receive tests on the NHS. That’s a lot of people, probably needing multiple tests too :-)
The same statement also implies that if you want to stock up with tests, or if you are a business wishing to install a testing regime on your staff, you can do so, but you must purchase the tests yourselves. So then, self-testing being implied ? MASS ORDERS through that channel too !! ( if there are any tests left !)
2) Dido Harding told a meeting of business leaders that NOT ALL the proposed 15-minute checks would be made available for free on the NHS.
Just to point out that the words used were NOT ALL which sit pretty much at the opposite end of the spectrum to the word ‘NONE’. Hence why I don’t understand the following conclusion from an earlier post;
“Suggests no multi million contract is forthcoming.“
I see Didos comments as being very encouraging indeed :-)
