Definition of 'Central Securities Depository (CSD)'

The principal function of a CSD is to immobilise or dematerialise securities, assuring that the bulk of securities transactions are processed in book–entry form. CSDs may also have the capability for trade clearance, safe custody and settlement/post settlement processing of securities and information. (Refer also to International CSDs, National CSDs, Euroclear and Cedel.)
