Definition of 'Carried Interest'

The general partners share of the profits generated throught a private equity fund, typically 20-25%. Carried interest is designed to be the general partners chief incentive for strong performance.

The term originated in the early days of VC, when general partners put up nothing in return for 20% of the profits; thus the limited partners "carried the interest" of the general partners.
