United Carpets Group plc
('United Carpets' or 'the Group')
AGM Statement
The following statement was made at the Annual General Meeting of United Carpets held today at 10.00am.
'Asย anticipatedย in ourย preliminary results announcementย inย July, trading conditions are challenging and are likelyย to remain soย for some time.ย However,ย United Carpetsย through its franchise modelย andย targetedย network of 76ย storesย continues toย deliverย a satisfactory performance.
Flooring and beds performed strongly at the beginning of the financial year, coming under more pressure as the expectation of an economic slowdown increasedย during theย summer.ย Whilst in the last 6 weeks, in the face of unrelenting bad news from the general economy, like for like sales were 6.4% down, cumulativeย like for like salesย for theย 30ย weeksย toย 23 Octoberย 2008ย remainย up by 3.0%.ย
The Group's strategyย continues to beย focused on providing quality products at affordable pricesย throughย aย network ofย branded storesย across Northern andย Central England.ย Positioned at the more resilient, value end of the market, with average invoice values forย flooringย below ยฃ200, ourย stores have benefitedย from the introduction of new flooringย and bedย rangesย andย an increased focus on customer service.ย The continuationย of co-ordinated marketing campaignsย with greater emphasis on encouraging customers to improve their existing homes during this period of relative inactivity in the housing marketย together with the increasing scale of the business have contributed toย the growingย awarenessย of the United Carpets brand.
The Group now operates 76ย stores, up from 65 at the beginning of the financial year,ย with a further 5ย new storesย already scheduledย to openย in this financial year.ย Whilst selective expansion will be a key driver in the longer-term growth of the business, this will only beย pursuedย where thereย areย clear opportunitiesย to establish a profitableย store. At the same time we will continue to seek high quality franchisees to take on new or existing corporate stores.ย
Whilst recognising that fewย retail businesses areย immune to a general economic slowdown,ย we believeย Unitedย Carpets is better placed thanย manyย to operate in the current environment.ย The businessย benefits from its franchise model which ensuresย the majority of storesย areย run by highly motivated self-employed franchiseesย targeting theย value end of the market.ย Thisย together with our principles of steady, controlled growth supportedย byย positive average cash balancesย meansย that theย Group continues toย deliver a stable performance.
We will report our interim results for the 6 months ended 30 September 2008ย in Decemberย 2008.'
