redT energy large scale modular units arrive at Testing Centre

redT energy plc, the energy storage technology company, is pleased to announce the arrival of two of its 15-240 energy storage systems at the Power Networks Demonstration Centre ("PNDC") in Cumbernauld, Scotland. This is a major milestone for the company as this is the first time that a large, contract manufactured, containerised vanadium flow battery has been shipped to a customer's project.

Working alongside DECC at PNDC's University of Strathclyde site, the units will be subjected to a rigorous programme of data analysis and performance benchmarking. The systems will also be examined from a customer integration perspective in order to further widen the existing range of suitable applications for large scale energy storage.

Following PNDC, the units will be transported to the Scottish Isle of Gigha, where they will be coupled with the island's 1MW wind farm to remove existing contraints on wind generation capacity. The project itself will eventually comprise 1.68MW of storage in the form of seven 15kW - 240kWh units connected in series.

redT's units were selected for this remote location, which has limited grid connection, due to their ability to balance variable generation from renewable sources and their cost effective time shifting of excess generation. The units will meet the need for efficient distributed storage, combined with the ability to respond to demand, dispatching energy when required.

The Gigha energy storage system is funded by DECC and redT is working alongside project partners; Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE), EA Technology Ltd., Community Energy Scotland (CES) and Gigha Green Power Ltd. (GGPL).

redT are showcasing the units during their time at PNDC and will be inviting potential customers to visit the site in the near future.

Scott McGregor, CEO of redT said,

"The delivery of contract manufactured, large-scale containerised vanadium flow batteries to a customer's project for the first time is a huge achievement for us and for the industry as a whole.

"We are making consistent progress towards the full commercialisation of our units and this news serves to underline the leading role we are playing in delivering a viable, modular solution to the energy storage market."

About redT energy

redT energy develops and supplies durable and robust energy storage systems based on proprietary vanadium redox flow technology for on and off-grid applications. The liquid storage medium affords an exceptionally long life of over 10,000 full charge/discharge cycles and a 100 per cent. usable depth of discharge. Combined with low maintenance requirements, this delivers industry leading levelised cost of storage (LCOS) and total cost of ownership (TCO) results. The modular approach allows the power and energy components of systems to be independently sized to meet customer requirements.

Until now it has not been possible to directly compare variable renewable energy generation sources with firm diesel or fossil fuel generation. PV + Storage is now reaching 'grid parity' in many countries, a paradigm shift in energy production, which will ultimately enable a distributed energy network optimising conventional and renewable generation. The redT energy system has applications in remote power, smart grids, power quality, and all aspects of renewable energy management.

About The Power Networks Demonstration Centre

The Power Networks Demonstration Centre (PNDC) was conceived by the Institute for Energy and Environment, within the Electronic and Electrical Engineering Department at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow. With 200 staff and researchers, the Institute is one of the largest electrical power engineering and energy technology university research groups in Europe, with a £35m portfolio of activities. The PNDC has the support of two of the UK's leading energy companies - ScottishPower and SSE - as founding partners, as well as the support of Scottish Enterprise and the Scottish Funding Council.
