Trading Statement
Bloomsbury PublishingΒ todayΒ announcesΒ its trading update for the year ending 31 December 2009 and reportsΒ thatΒ 2009Β trading wasΒ in line withΒ management'sΒ expectations.Β
2009 sales wereΒ excellentΒ driven by a strong publishing programme. ThisΒ includedΒ River Cottage EverydayΒ by Hugh Fearnley-WhittingstallΒ which was a tie-in to a TV series on Channel Four in the lead up to Christmas;Β The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society byΒ Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows;Β The Suspicions of Mr WhicherΒ by Kate SummerscaleΒ which was one of the TopΒ paperbacks of 2009;Β The Fat Duck CookbookΒ by Heston Blumenthal;Β The Last Fighting TommyΒ by Harry Patch and Richard Van Emden;Β Ordinary ThunderstormsΒ by William Boyd;Β Storms of my GrandchildrenΒ by James Hansen;Β MethlandΒ by Nick Reding.Β Sales of the box setΒ of the sevenΒ Harry PotterΒ booksΒ were particularlyΒ strong.
Tottel Publishing which was acquired in July 2009 and renamed Bloomsbury ProfessionalΒ performedΒ well andΒ in line with expectations.
DuringΒ the past three years,Β BloomsburyΒ has concludedΒ a number of long-termΒ database and managementΒ contractsΒ increasing theΒ visibilityΒ of cash flow and profit for the Group.Β In December Bloomsbury concludedΒ aΒ majorΒ dealΒ withΒ Qatar Foundation and Qatar National Research Fund (QNRF),Β to establishΒ aΒ new scientificΒ journalΒ publishing house to be based inΒ Doha,Β Qatar.Β This initiative will extend the unique relationship between Qatar Foundation andΒ Bloomsbury. Bloomsbury Qatar Foundation Journals (BQFJ), will publish scientific research developed to the highest international peer review standards in order to connect the international research community to one of the fastest growing research and development centres in the world. The venture will cover all research subjects, including medical, physical, engineering, Islamic and social sciences and the arts. The scientific journal publishing deal with Qatar Foundation and QNRF is an important strategicΒ step forwardΒ for the Group.Β
Period-end cash for the Group is likely to be in the region of Β£35m.
The preliminary results for the year ended 31st December 2009Β will be announced onΒ 30thΒ March 2009.
